I am not psychic but was just lucky the reduced cart was being wheeled out shortly after I entered the store today at WM!!
Every bag is just $1.00 ( as many of you know )
    I got 2 bags ( with 16 in each ) med/lg sized gala apples, 1 bag ( with 9 extra lg ) Asian pears, 2 bags tomatoes.
    Total OOP at WM $5.00

Then dashed over to NF and seems like the produce dept is FINALLY listening to the complaints I have been making about their silly 50% off stickers being slapped on the reduced produce. No one was buying the stuff because they could not judge what the bag would come to. Rotting fruits and veg is not profitable for them it seems. ha ha
    I lucked out, grabbed 4 bags tomatoes @ .99 each and another 3 bags ( bigger bags ) @ $1.49 ea.
WM reduced produce is superior by far but I wanted to do another whack of sauce up so needed more of them.
Total OOP at NF was $8.43

I worked out the cost of all of the tomatoes and seems I got them for a mere .24 cents a lb!!
The total yield in weight was 42 lbs, I washed and saved the absolute best firmest ones for eating ( 3 lbs ) and am going to process the remaining 39 lbs tomorrow. They are currently freezing right now! ( I wanted to try that boiling bath method for removing the skins this time, hope it works! )

    This outing made my day!!

Hey I found a stand with $1 produce at my Walmart as well a couple days ago! Got a good size bag of red potatoes from it. I hope they keep doing this - like you said it is a better idea than stickers or just letting produce rot.

This morning I pulled the hard as rock tomatoes out of the freezer, poured hot tap water ( but my tap water is scalding hot! ) over them a few at a time and after a few minuted sitting I could not believe how the skins slipped right off!

here is where I learned about that method morningrose

I think I am going to make this batch as sauce. before I cook up all the tomato " meat " with as many seeds removed as I care to bother removing ( I am not that fussy about seeds ), I will toss all of them in my food processor and pulse it until smooth like a sauce, then I will add my spices to it ( garlic, basil. onion, s&p, maybe rosemary? ) and cook it on the stove for as long as it takes to reduce, until it looks thicker....so not sure how long.

I'll get my mason jars all washed, and sterile, get my boiling water bath pot ready, put 1 tsp lemon juice into each jar before I fill them up with sauce. I'll remove any air bubbles with my plastic tool pushing down on the inside of the jar, wiping all edges with a damp clean paper towel and topping each with a sterile ( new ) lid and then hand tighten the screw cap over each jar.
Placing the jars into the hot water bath ( 1" of water covering the tops ) for 35 minutes of processing time. This book (guide ) I use says not to " disturb " the jars for 12 hours while they are sitting on the dry towels after they come out of the bath!! Man I can remember a time when I used to have a bath and when I got out I never even got 12 seconds before someone called me!!

    bwahahahaha!!!!

I'll let you all know later how many jars I get!
