On one hand, the community is being asked to forgive the shooter (surely at 17 he will not be sentenced as an adult, and he is entitled to a Gladue Report http://gladuereports.org/)

    Gladue in a Nutshell

To remedy the over-representation of Aboriginal people in prison, Section 718.2(e) of the Criminal Code and R. v. Gladue, affirmed in R. v. Ipeelee, instructs judges at sentencing to take notice of the unique circumstances of Aboriginal offenders, and consider all available sanctions, that are reasonable in the circumstances, other than imprisonment.

OTOH, the mayor and MP are calling for the school to be torn down.

I am not sure if the outcome of all of this is going to make sense.

The Crown may ask that he be sentenced as an adult, for sure.

There is a current case in SK, in Regina, where two 16 year old boys are charged with the murder of a girl. The Crown said it will request adult sentences if there are convictions.

Here in SK, we are quite familiar with Gladue sentences, they happen all the time.

this sounds sort of lame-brained but - one of the people who called in to
cross country checkup mentioned how indigenous peoples have an
    ingrained fear/dislike/hatred etc. of schools.

i don't think he should be charged as an adult, too young and too many
    obviously too many insidious problems.
terrible that his relatives and some who were killed are from the
same family - sighing,,, so awful

Apparently community leaders met with Brad Wall and felt that the meeting went well and that Wall would help take action to help the community

The accused appeared in court in Meadow Lake today, and was remanded into custody until the next appearance Feb. 22.

The judge ordered a publishing ban on any details identifying the teen, and also any details that would identify any of those injured.

About 150 people gathered last night at a vigil in Stanley Mission, SK to show their support for the people in #LaLoche.

So friends say the murderer was a black sheep in his family, bullied, and treated unfairly and unequally - but of course this is the government's fault.

The community bullied the murderer relentlessly - but of course this is the government's fault.

"The murderer is the victim" - and not people like Adam Wood, who came to help the community (as a government employee - I guess because he's government he deserved it?)

I don't like how they are spinning this.

Harper changed the rules on multiple murders so that this murderer should be facing 100 years in jail before parole...but is seems the family is demanding that everyone hug and kiss and love and forgive him.

Pretty disgusting. If they don't hold this murderer to account, what is to stop other kids from emulating him, knowing that they will just get off and be returned to their communities that they attack?

Mark McMorris sending sporting equipment to La Loche

Not only is the Saskatchewan snowboarder dedicating his performance at the X-Games this weekend to the La Loche, he and his team are also working to send sporting equipment to the area.

McMorris is hopeful that the gear will not only help La Loche now but into the future as well.

"Get kids to learn life lessons through sports. That keeps everybody out of trouble. Sports are so valuable," he said.

Naturally, McMorris will be sending snowboards to the community but also hockey gear and whatever else they think would be appropriate.

    The Seven Injured

While people in La Loche, Sask., continue to grieve the deaths of four people, others are focused on the seven people seriously injured in Friday's mass shooting.

Those victims of the shooting at La Loche Community School were taken from the northern town to Saskatoon, about 600 kilometres southwest, for more advanced medical care.
Family and friends of the seven wounded are maintaining a vigil at Royal University Hospital, where several victims are still undergoing surgeries.

One of the victims is the assistant principal of the high school and the coach of the boys volleyball team. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Another victim is the wife of the vice principal, who often works in the school. She's undergone at least two surgeries, although her injuries are not life-threatening, either.

Among those wounded are at least three students. Two are high school boys who play football, while the third is a female student whose injuries are life-threatening.

No update was immediately available about the other two victims.

Sending a message of hope, Saskatoon residents
honour La Loche victims with candlelight vigil

Holding candles amid the sound of drums, dozens of Saskatoon residents met at the Vimy memorial in Saskatoon’s Kiwanis Park on Wednesday to pay respect to the northern community of La Loche

    They lit some candles?

I'm sorry, but that's absolutely meaningless.

Northern Canada is a horror no child should have to grow up in.

And I'm sure as hell not talking about the snow.

DaveP -People are lost. They don't know what to do, they don't know what to say, they are afraid themselves of what the future holds.

But they do want to express their sympathy and solidarity. It's a bit like coming to a funeral to give your respects. Won't bring the loved one back but may give some comfort to the Living left behind. . .

    I know.

I've just seen so much bad up there and I don't know how anyone can fix it. I've cried so many times from what has happened up there to those I cared for.

Dave, I do understand your feelings, but I agree with MQ - there isn't another way for people from away to express their sympathy.
