I just found out about another independent Toronto bookstore that will close in mid-June but it will continue online. Thought it was time we had a thread outside of Local to let SCers post about bookstores that are finding the Internet age costing them their streetfront locations in retail areas across the nation.

Serbica Books will close on June 15 and will remain an online seller of books (www.serbica.com) published in Serbian or written in English about topics relevant to Serbian history and culture and travel.

Independent bookstores that have closed in Toronto:
    Nicholas Hoare (2013)
    The Cookbook Store (2014)
    Toronto Women's Bookstore (2012)
Librairie Champlain (2009-Toronto's sole French language bookstore)
A few bookstores on Queen St. W. and Yonge St.

Guelph will be losing Macondo Books once the closing sale is done. Then the building will be listed for sale.

Which bookstores are closing in your province/territory? Will they remain online in some way?

It's a sign of the internet, I think. In Ottawa, we have quite a number of independent bookstores, most in the downtown core. A couple are generalist, and they survive because they're near the tourists areas and take advantage of the pedestrian traffic going by. Others are specialised: French only, New Age, Religion, Feminists, etc.

Yes, that Chapters at John/Richmond had displays of books tying in with movies showing next door. It was a good concept destination. What are condo tower residents in the area going to have for culture content now?
@blueeyetea-the bookstores that can turn that pedestrain traffic into actual sales probably can keep going and possible keep their book events going as well. Helps when owners are tourist-savvy and informed of events in area to perhaps feature displays/merchandise to tie in.

*Update-50% off books now at John/Richmond

what is going on with bookstores ?......is this because people order their books from Amazone or other online stores ?

P.S. you can order French books from Amazone.....and Renaud-Bray , a QC bookstore offering free shipping every now and then , no minimum , this offer is ''on'' today

Just discovered this on a magazine site-Maison de la Press in Yorkville closed in July! Since that store was within a block or two of the Cookbook store, residents are going to have to look forward to the Salon Du Livre at the Toronto Reference Library to stock up on French books.

    http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014...ng_trends.html

I don't know if the Yorkville branch library (across the road from the MdlP store) has a used book sale featuring any of its French titles or not.

L'Express mentioned an English language book fair was coming to Toronto. It's a week after the French one. http://www.lexpress.to/archives/14340/

Natynat posted about Montreal's Chapters store on Ste. Catherine Street having a 50% off sale. Store will close on October 4. Victoria's Secret will be moving into the space for 2015.

It stopped printing the hardcopy in March.

I think it had more to do with the fact that there are many food related magazines already. It never stood a chance.

It's not as bad as it sounds. Indigo, the owner of Chapters, opened an Indigo store a couple blocks away.

Vancouver is losing a cookbook store. The owner will continue as an online bookseller.
As the bookstore heads towards shutter at the end of February, the inventory will be on sale. Books will be on 25% discount, with some stock discounted at 40%. Many of the furnishings will also be for sale.

Some of the small independent book stores are surviving because of the internet. I work in a small used bookstore and there are very few walk in customers. Most of our sales are from around the world. We are on the ABE.com and ETSY.com sites plus a few others.
