Did a partial cleanup of our freezer this weekend. I simply cannot believe how much meat we tossed. I'm completely embarrassed at how much money was wasted. Part of the reason was the freezer bags we were using and also partly because they were frozen in their original packaging. I remember DH telling me it's okay to freeze in the original packaging but I now know that it isn't nearly durable enough! My lazy brain wanted to believe it anyways.

That really sucks, but sometimes we have to live and learn from our mistakes. I'm still learning how quickly or differently I have to handle various produce from my garden at the end of the growing season or else it ends up being thrown out instead of being eaten. This is one of the reasons that I have liked trading my green tomatoes at the end of the growing season instead of having to spend additional time on that produce. I have thrown out a lot over the years, more than I'd like to admit...especially since I grew it myself.

    Good morning!

Hoping everyone has a great start to the week, and to Spring!

Our son brought over some venison products from a friend of his - the jerky is absolutely delish, and there are also smokies/sausage and ground meat.

@Angela273 or anyone else who has made meals from ground venison - any ideas? Do I add ground pork to it before using in a recipe? My son wasn't sure if it was pure venison or not, and it doesn't say on the package - there are four one-pound packages. I was thinking maybe for the first time to try it to make shipwreck casserole... Any help would be appreciated.

@ Natalka venison may taste wild, particularly if you have never eaten it before. I have used it straight in a recipe, or mixed it with another ground meat. Some people prefer to used ground venison in more strongly flavoured meal, like taco meat, because it hides any flavour. Everyone in our house likes all varieties of meat, even our little ones. Venison is very lean and often does not have anything to drain from the pan when cooking. I currently have pre-cooked meatballs in the freezer that I made with ground venison and lean ground pork, then did my regular add-ins and seasonings.

Today is the day to get free DQ icecream cones. I think we'll go for "coffee" there tonight.

Thanks so much, I appreciate it!
We had only had venison sausage before, so I look forward to trying out cooking with the ground meat.

Good Morning Natalka!! The majority of our meat is wild game. Unless you know the history of the animal it is hard to say what you have there!! The age and how it was field dressed is important for the flavor, as well as what the deer was feeding on, we butcher our own because a lot of butcher shops mix game when processing, if they have several deer they will mix it and you don't know who's meat you are getting. Ground venison is the most forgiving for cooking, I would take a tablespoon and scramble fry it to see if there is any fat added or it is dry, especially if you want to make burgers, your shipwreck casserole would be a great choice to use it with, I find meatballs like Angela suggested are great as well, I use a panade when I make them to keep them moist. If you do want to add ground pork I would do about 20-30% pork to venison. I hope you enjoy it!!

Just cleaned out my wallet from the week/weekend. Put all my change in a bag and will put loonies in my jar and the rest in a wallet in my car for parking/coffee etc. Put a $200 credit on my CT MC on the weekend ( I had cash win from casino so still like to get points so put credit on card and use card) (Saving my CT $ on the card for frying pan/kitchen purchases)
Need to clean my vehicle out! If I treat myself to Chinese I think I will do it tonight since I won't have to spend time in the kitchen. Think I will go home afterwork, clean out car, have a work out then order Chinese! Love that it is nice and light out till after 7pm. Makes me enjoy the evening instead of wanting to curl up under a blanket on the couch.

My Mark's online order. Ordered 9 items. Received 5 last week in my mailbox. Each in it's own packaging. 2 items they can't find/ship so will credit my card. Last item they tried to deliver via Purolator when I was away last week. I have to go pick up at Purolator depot today. I am not sure how they made any money when everything I bought was on clearance/fantastic price and I used a further discount (save $10 wus over $50) and no charge for shipping.

I don't plan on shopping till Sunday the earliest. Freezer is still full and we have fresh veggies to use up (peppers, cucumbers, onion etc) Green beans in the freezer, Fruit- we have a couple apples, bananas, 1 orange and about 12 clemintines and a pineapple. Will be good to be creative and use up what we have. I have made nacho dip for DS for his lunch this week. He has a school tournament one day as well so I will pack him snacks and fruit and drinks and be a nice mommy and give him money for a hot lunch .

I would do what thriftygranny suggested pan fry a small amount and taste. We've had some deer meat that I loved and enjoy more than beef and we've had some that are just gamey it all depends on various factors.

    Good luck & enjoy

    Afternoon everyone,

I stripped 3 long pieces of trim, I'll strip another 3 tomorrow and on and on until they are done. It's such a big job, 3-5 layers of paint.

I made a new cookie recipe, I think they are great, I have froze 1/2 for another day (lunch snacks), I've got 6x 2 packs of cookies for lunch snacks this week and left 8 out for dessert. So I'm sure I'll get the taste test reviews. Here's the recipe if anyone is interested, I cooked the cookies for longer than suggested as they were way too soft but everyones ovens are different

    https://www.letsdishrecipes.com/2016...r-cookies.html

Tomorrow I will be making a double batch of pecan pie muffins as the current recipe only makes 8. FOr those interested you can double the recipe but don't need to double the pecans

I'm glad I got everything done before I got tired (lol).

Going to relax for the rest of the night besides tidy up

I had a frugal morning. I took our twins for a big walk in the stroller. They fell to sleep before we arrived at the mall. I put up new daycare posters, got info from Sasktel regarding reducing our cable package, and finally found a place that has baby hair clips. I spent $5.31 at Sobeys, saved $7.28 and earned 6 Air Miles I redeemed an FPC, used a $1 coupon, and bought my two 50% off Air Miles items. I collected so many bottles and cans that it wouldn't all fit in the grocery bag. I also found 30c in coins. I walked about 3km round trip. I picked our son up from Pre-K on the way home. We then spent the next 1/2 hr playing in our yard.

@Angela273 -great walk finds! Every bit of treasure helps the budget. Glad you got to play too.
@Natalka -shipwreck casserole? That's a new to me title. Found it online-looks like a pantry surprise version of shepherd's pie but with the potatoes not mashed. Aka cowboy casserole. Slow cooker version: http://www.kitchenfrau.com/shipwreck-casserole/
Think I need to share this recipe with Mom after Easter because her moussaka is not popular nor worth the effort anymore. This casserole seems so easy by comparison.
