What's blooming in your yard?

Some grape hyacinths are bobbing about. The scilla were finished as of last week. Dandelions have come to roost on most lawns (young leaves are best for salad mixes if you are inclined to pick your own rather than pay at produce dept.)

One clump of tulips have opened up FINALLY today.

Every time I think that I can get outside to clean up the grass edges it bloody rains. Bah. Oh well, the more it rains the less I have to water.

I have to find some super duper grass seed for shade and shade only. It does not like it under the catalpa tree. Nothing but bare dirt under there right now. Every year after winter is the same thing. I am very hesitant to plant any sort of ground cover because I don't want to be overrun by anything invasive. Every year I grow to dislike that tree just a little bit more than the previous year. And then the leaves pop out and what a great privacy screen it is and suddenly I like it again.

Why not try some ground cover - hosta, pachysandra etc? for under the trees - shade

I am so going to miss our early springs - having to move back from BC to Ontario..good news is we are moving to the banana belt - so there is hope. We have a myriad of rhodos and just acquired a new one from a friend - and it is blooming - mine will wait a month or so. Daffs are done, Hyacinths are done, blueberries have a gazillion blooms and white berries, translucent apple has lots of blooms, a few tulips are out there - and I see my California fuschia is coming back full force! Evergreen clematis is out in full bloom and the decorative raspberry (or something along those lines) is up and at em. Some heathers have blooms - the others that are supposed to bloom in winter have just finished.

And yeh - I do have dandelions as well as that bindweed!

Not sure if I mentioned it last year, but I found a plant growing in the dead part of the grass under the catalpa tree. It was definitely not a weed so I dug it up and planted it in a pot before the lawn mower man decided to scalp it. I had no clue what it was, it almost looked a little bit like a miniature wisteria but it didn't bring any sort of climbing tendrils. It was out in full sun and seemed happy, the foliage was pretty. So I left it over winter in the pot. It came back again this spring, fluffy and lush and pretty, still in the full sun. However, this year I see many flower buds on it. That was all I needed. Turns out to be a Jacob's Ladder. No idea how this little guy found his way into my yard but I'm glad I rescued it. A squirrel or a bird must have dropped a seed, that's the only explanation. Reading up on it just now, I see that they don't care so much for full sun but mine seemed to do fine. I may move him to a slightly shadier spot though. I'm happy, always wanted one of these

My Rhubarb plants are getting huge and all my flowering perennials are up and looking great!

That's what I hear too. But then again, I also heard that dandelion wine is wonderful. And then I had some. Blech.

Remember, the young leaves are best and mix them with other greens. Or be shocked how much the price is per pound for dandelion leaves in the produce section-really. It's a good game.

I can't tell you the last time I've seen one, probably when I was still back in BC. I couldn't even tell you if they grow in Ontario, although I'm sure they must.
