Pyeongchang 2018: A look at Canada’s largest-ever Winter Games delegation

Canada will send 225 athletes and 87 coaches to the Pyeongchang Olympics, its largest-ever delegation for a Winter Games.
The Canadian Olympic Committee says the team of athletes includes 122 men and 105 women.
The oldest competitor is Calgary curler Cheryl Bernard, who is 51. Calgary-based bobsledder Lascelles Brown, 43, is the oldest male athlete.

Snowboarding has the two youngest athletes in 16-year-olds Eliot Grondin of Ste-Marie, Que., and Elizabeth Hosking of Longueuil, Que. Snowboarder Jasey-Jay Anderson, 42, of Mont-Tremblant, Que., is making his sixth Winter Games appearance, a Canadian record.

Canada is in a position to win a record number of medals in Pyeongchang, topping the previous mark of 26 in Vancouver in 2010. Canadians brought home 25 medals in 2014.

This is just so wrong... so many athletes are disgusted by it.

Olympic doping bans of 28 Russian athletes overturned

Sport's highest tribunal on Thursday overturned the Olympic doping bans of 28 Russian athletes and reinstated their results at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi in upholding their appeals.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said in a statement that it had found insufficient evidence during last week's hearing in Geneva that the 28, banned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), were guilty of anti-doping violations in Sochi.

"With respect to these 28 athletes, the appeals are upheld, the sanctions annulled and their individual results achieved in Sochi 2014 are reinstated," said the Lausanne-based tribunal.
The 28 who had their bans lifted could now seek late entry into the Olympics, which start Feb. 9 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, but the IOC said "not being sanctioned does not automatically confer the privilege of an invitation."

The World Anti-Doping Agency said late Thursday it "notes with serious concern" the CAS decision and did not rule out an appeal.

"WADA understands that this decision will cause dismay and frustration among athletes. The agency supports the IOC's intention to analyze these decisions very carefully and consider all options, including an appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal."

Thursday's decision could impact Canada's medal count in Sochi.
The Canadian luge team was expected to get upgraded to bronze — the first Olympic medal for Canada in the sport — after Russians Albert Demchenko and Tatiana Ivanova were stripped of their results and received lifetime bans. Both were members of the squad that won silver in the team event in Sochi, where Canada finished fourth.

    Oh, no - norovirus outbreak...

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea – The organizing committee for the Pyeongchang Olympics has called in 900 military personnel after more than 1,200 security workers were pulled off duty because of concerns about the spread of the Norovirus, Christophe Dubi, IOC executive director of the Olympic Games said Tuesday.

Later Tuesday evening, the organizing committee said 32 cases of Norovirus had been confirmed and those people were quarantined after being treated. Those 32 cases involve 21 private security staff members from the Horeb Youth Center and 11 people from other locations, including three foreigners.

    Canada Olympic House unveiled

The 12,000-square-foot facility was unveiled Wednesday night in Gangneung with Gov. Gen. Julie Payette cutting the ribbon.
“This is indeed the dawn of another two weeks that we will all live together, some of you will live the entire Olympics right here,” Payette told the crowd.

Didn't expect to see him again....

Now here’s the one you’ve all been waiting for: Tonga. They’re led by Pita Taufatofua, who became a viral sensation two years ago when he led his delegation into the Rio opening ceremony shirtless and oiled-up. He competed in taekwondo at those Summer Games, but has qualified for Pyeongchang as a cross-country skier despite having not seen snow until two years ago.

Clearly, he doesn't quite grasp the fact that snow is cold and one covers up in the winter

So THIS happened, that means they cannot compete, right?

Russia denied: CAS dismisses Olympic appeal from 45 banned athletes

The Russians were denied invitations to the Olympics because of evidence linking them to past doping

Yes, they can't, so glad it was overturned.

The other Russians are competing as Olympic athletes from Russia, under the olympic flag.
