In the December issue of Forever Young, the article on caregivers also mentions what to do for caregivers once their patients have passed away (keep in touch, invite to events, etc.). See page 22 of the Hamilton digital edition:

Found two opinion pieces in different papers (same corporate parent) that cover grief (one year after a grandparent's death, how has life changed for the author) and caregiving in Ontario.

    Grief: https://www.thespec.com/opinion-stor...is-never-easy/

    https://www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...et-crisis.html
(I've printed a copy for Mom to read. We are so in that trench right now.)

And a third article-just spotted about all the forms of loss. Pity I did not see this in the paper. Must print it off next week. Social relationships have taken a severe pruning in this decade for me.

Good to refresh ways of coping during grief. As many wise members with lived experiences of grief journeys have posted, each one is personal. Crying is definitely something that can help with processing grief.

Some of the books on health that I have read state it's important not to suppress emotions, else they show up as illness in the body later. The mind-body connection is real.

Incidentally, I discovered by chance that Netflix is showing Heal the Documentary. In it, the importance of the mind is emphasized in turning on one's internal pharmacy, which really depends on how one handles stress and relaxation. If the brain is relaxed and told things are well, the body is signalled to do things to support that mindset. If the brain is stressed or told that things are not well, the body responds to the brain's cues in the same way.

What to not say and what to say to someone who is grieving:
    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/14/s...-grieving.html
[QUOTE]Indeed, the most helpful thing anyone said to Teresa Brewer in her time of loss was, “Whatever you are feeling, and whenever you are feeling it, it’s O.K.”
“I can’t tell you how liberating that was for me as I grieved,” she wrote. “There were times when many would think that I or my family should be somber, but we were howling with laughter. So it helps to be given permission for the feelings you have.”/QUOTE]

Hoping this article will help those of you who are grieving or about to learn of someone close to you who is about to die. Best to know what to say.

The Central branch of the Burlington Public Library will hold a May 2 talk about death. Registration is required for the free talk.

Pet owners/pet parents who have lost a pet can likely agree that their grief over their pets' deaths is just as real as that of someone they know: https://www.thestar.com/life/relatio...loved-pet.html

Facebook is addressing grief issues by providing some controls for legacy contacts to use on Facebook pages of deceased loved ones:

I like how the article provides examples of shift vs support conversations.

Hmm, self-stigma! (I already employ the avoidance strategy-not going to walk into a social space where a known person or scenario is negative towards/for me.)

On the passage of time (I do agree it seems to be passing faster as I get older):
    https://whatsyourgrief.com/mourning-...ssage-of-time/

I know those of you who have found peace with the passage of time may be thinking I’m being a little shortsighted, but I suspect just as many of you agree. Whenever Litsa and I hold workshops and ask people about they losses they grieve, inevitably someone shares something like “the passage of time” or “getting older” or “the feeling that memories of my loved one are fading.”
