At the risk of losing the Post-its, or the tape... I use a Sharpie. It doesnt rub off (easily) and doesnt go missing... AND (before you say you cant change the balance) here's a fun/practical fact: You can ERASE a Sharpie from the gift card surface with one of those white plastic "drafting" erasers (see image). So I erase the balance and re-write the new balance... no post-its to lose, no tape or sticky residue on my cards or in my wallet.

I don't see me switching from using masking tape, which doesn't require erasing, has never led to any issues with residue, and lets me update my total immediately while I still have my GC out without needing to carry around an eraser. But since it a matter of "to each his own" rather than "one size fits all", it's good for people to be aware of different possibilities.

Like Arjon, I'm happy with the way I'm doing it now. And as I said, most of the time the cashier writes the balance on the post-it for me. Been doing it this way I figure for at least 6 years so having it come off 2-3 times in that period is not a big deal. And when I say it comes off, I mean in my wallet - and usually because I've stuck a credit card between the post-it and gc. So I just re-attach

That's how I do but I don't erase just stroke out and put in the new total. My GC don't last that long...LOL.

I was just coming to post this offer and also add a head's up. Here's what I posted in the PCO thread:

A heads-up: I did the Beauty Boutique GC promo that's on this weekend. The cards were sitting on a display on the counter at the cash at the front and all 3 cosmeticians -including the manager - were at the back chatting. I went through the cards looking for a number I liked (kind of a superstition) and found 2 cards that had the pin area scratched off with the pins exposed. I would bet whoever did that took pictures so they had the card # and pin and are just waiting for the card to be activated. i turned the cards over to the cosmetics manager but wanted to let everyone here know. The Beauty Boutique GCs - at least the ones here - don't come with a cardboard backing like a lot of the newer SDM GCs do, so easier to access the area to scratch for the pin.

Seems people are lifting the cards off the racks, removing the scratch off areas, collecting the card # and PIN, and then replacing the latex, and returning the cards to the store waiting for someone to buy/load the the card.

Seems people are lifting the cards off the racks, removing the scratch off areas, collecting the card # and PIN, and then replacing the latex, and returning the cards to the store waiting for someone to buy/load the the card.

Thanks for posting this @bhlombardy . Wow, that is taking it to another level.

At the SDM I shop at most regularly, I do ask for GCs that have not been put out on the floor. When SDM had those wub GC promos, I would call ahead and the manager would put new ones straight from the office aside for me. Unfortunately, the other SDM I shop at - where they also know me - they are not as organized or customer-friendly but there are times I do need to pick up GCs at that location.

It does make me think twice about buying and using GCs now.
