You're in luck! It is not too late to grow the following from seed:

Summer Squash (zucchini, yellow straightneck, scallop, etc)
    Snap beans (the bush variety)
Dry beans for soups, casseroles, etc (the bush variety)
    Kale, lettuce, Swiss Chard, collards
    Beets
    Carrots (if you plant soon!)
Peas (bush/dwarf - if you plant soon!)
    Cucumber (if you plant soon!)

I garden in zone 2, so if these things will grow from seed for me up here, I am pretty sure they will do well for you in Ontario. Planting transplants gives you produce more quickly, but if you can't find free transplants, free seeds might be the next best option.

A place I just learned about, based in Nova Scotia, that offers heirloom vegetable, flower, and herb seeds is called, "Yonder Hill Farm". I like the clean, simple look of their website.

Niagara on the Lake library has a ‘seed library’. Free to all and you don’t need to be a member. Maximum 3 packets per family

Here is a neat Kickstarter for new varieties of artisanal/open-pollinated tomato seeds (including some Canadian varieties at the higher levels of pledging). It ends October 12th.

This is a great list of Canadian sources of seeds, seed potatoes, garlic, fruit, etc.

Not sure how you'd get rose seeds-aren't they the rose hips of the flowers? Or a small plant from a rose grower might do if s/he does not have any rose hips from their plants to share.

Fortinos visit today-outside the floral dept. are two seed racks from Bertons and Burpee. I need to take 5min to see if there's something I'd like to sow in the garden come March. (Garlic plantings are 4 months in the ground already-exciting!)

Fortinos Ancaster-The Burton seed display carton was 2/3 empty. Someone placed the display next to greeting cards in the floral dept. Think many shoppers are trying their gardening skills this year. There were still lots of Burpee seed packets in its display carton.

I want to buy magnolias. I did not find seedlings in local stores. Can you tell me a good store where you can see seedlings and can choose something interesting.

I order my sprouting seeds from Mum's seeds. I specifically like sprouting mung beans (traditional bean sprouts), Sandwich booster mix and Salad mix.

In our area, a couple of years ago and probably ongoing - the libraries had set up ‘seed libraries’. You could choose (i think it was 3 ) envelopes of the seeds you wanted. Great news - if you had a library card with one library - but the seeds were in another library nearby - you could use your card. The Niagara on the lake did not ask for proof of my card in the Niagara system
