Suggestions for a teacher...

Hi everyone.
For those of you that do not know, I have one year left at the UofS before I am officially a full time teacher. I will be teaching Native Studies 11, for a week at the end of March for part of my practicum. I am teaching a global social justice unit at a local Catholic school.

I just came across this interesting idea on the web and am excited about possibly using it in my classroom at the end of the month.

I'd really appreciate ideas for items that the students could bid on that aren't too corny. I would also like to get some things that would not cost me too much money since I am on student loans. I'm already planning a coupon stacking trip to London Drugs. I will be using coupons to purchase Dove and Olay products that some female students will hopefully be interested in. I enjoy baking and just thought of feeding the class. I am teaching them the period just prior to lunch. I will look into any food allergies that they may have and keep them in mind. Any other ideas, particularly for the guys??

I plan on doanting any items that are not "sold" in the auction to local women's shelters.

I am a teacher in in Halifax (Grade 7 Science and Social Studies) and have found that even in JR high, students get very excited about simple prizes from the dollarstore. Another incentive you might want to use for the entire class sometime (say, if everyone in the class gets at least a B on the next test/assignment or raises the most money for a fundraiser etc) is Ice Cream Cake or Pizza. This is great for end of year and your school might be able to help with some of the cost.

The only thing I would be careful of with the funny money is ensuring the money stays with its owner - depending on how old the kids are - I have seen these kinds of things get stolen. You might be able to solve that by recording who has been awarded funny money each day.

If by Native Studies 11 you mean grade 11, then I would run the idea by a few students first. If you have a few students who think the game is stupid or childish they will ruin it for everyone and the kids who think it could be fun will usually keep their mouths shut so that they don't get deemed a loser.

While the idea is good, I'm not so sure about using it at that age level - I would think twice about it. However, talk with your co-ordinating teacher abut it, s/he knows the students.
I know as a beginning teacher, it's easy to get excited - and that's wonderful, I know I always was - but just don't put too much of your own money into stuff. That can really go overboard. It might be fine to bring some baking on your last day, for example.
Concentrate more on developing your unit and resources, that's more what your supervisor will be looking for.
