    Happy Caturday Q sters,

Wrap yourself in blankets & put that long underwear on, it's a frigid one this morning. Hopefully the car will start, but it probably won't warm up till I get to work. It's my 1st Caturday to work this year & it's a frozen one.
    Stay inside & be warm.

    good afternoon, qts

it warmed up a bit today but they're predicting snowfall tonight.

    • City of Toronto

    Significant snowfall beginning tonight.

    What:
Total snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 cm with locally higher amounts of 25 cm possible.
Snow, at times heavy, with peak snowfall rates of 2 to 3 cm per hour possible which could significantly reduce visibilities.
Local blowing snow at times due to winds gusting up to 60 km/h.

    When: Tonight through Monday evening.

Discussion: A low pressure system tracking south of the Great Lakes will bring significant snowfall to the region. Heavy snow will likely significantly impact the Monday morning commute. Local blowing snow is also possible Monday afternoon and evening with gusty northerly to northwesterly winds.
Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas. Take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow.

    Welcome to winter, Q sters,

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day & today is a winter wonderland, with lots of white stuff & the winds to pick up.
No school for the rug rodents, as buses are not running. Some have online & others don't.
Have a great day & stay safe.

    good morning, qts

it's a wintery morning! it's still snowing heavily and the wind is blowing .
blizzard warning in effect. be careful out there!

    Today

Snow at times heavy ending late this afternoon then partly cloudy. Local blowing snow. Amount 10 to 15 cm. Wind north 30 km/h gusting to 60. High minus 4. Wind chill near minus 15.

    Tonight

Cloudy. 40 percent chance of flurries late this evening and overnight. Local blowing snow this evening. Wind northwest 30 km/h gusting to 50. Low minus 12. Wind chill minus 13 this evening and minus 20 overnight.

    Tuesday

Mainly cloudy. 40 percent chance of flurries early in the morning. Wind up to 15 km/h. High minus 5. Wind chill minus 19 in the morning and minus 11 in the afternoon. UV index 1 or low.

    Warnings

    7:45 AM EST Monday 17 January 2022
    Blizzard warning in effect for:

    • City of Toronto

Blizzard conditions with gusty winds and persistent visibility near zero in snow and blowing snow are expected or occurring.

    Blizzard conditions are occuring.

    Hazards:
Hazardous blizzard conditions with heavy snow and strong winds resulting in widespread near zero visibilities.
Total snowfall amounts of 25 to 40 cm.
Heavy snow with peak snowfall rates of 5 to 8 cm per hour this morning.
Blowing snow due to winds gusting up to 60 km/h.

When: Now through this evening. Worst conditions expected between now until 11:00 am EST.

Discussion: A low pressure system tracking south of the Great Lakes is currently bringing significant snowfall and blizzard conditions to the region. This will significantly impact the commute this morning.

    Impacts:

Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous due to widespread poor visibility. Travel is expected to be very difficult or impossible due to near-zero visibility. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas. If you become stranded in a vehicle do not leave. The vehicle offers a form of protection from the cold. A single person walking through the snow is harder to find than a stranded car or truck. If you do travel and become lost, remain where you are until the blizzard has passed. Protect yourself from wind, cold and disorientation by staying sheltered, indoors or with your vehicle.

What a wild Monday it was. I didn't have any issues getting to work, but some places were horrendous. Some of the plows that were doing mall parking lots only did half the lot & left a big wall of white stuff & the rest of the lot unplowed. It was a slow day, but got caught up in a lot of things that needed doing but could never fit them in. Today is back to the so called normal grind. Hopefully the people that plow our lot will have gotten it done. My neighbour across the way, went home to pick up his snow blower to do his parking spaces & was nice enough to do mine as well. When I left at 4pm, the plow was finally coming in to clean the lot. I know that our lot may not have been a priority, but when he houses his plow trucks in our complex, how difficult is it to do a few passes before heading out. He did manage to clear all around his door & driveway before he left. Today should be a different picture. Take care & stay safe.

    Good morning fellow Canucks!

Well that was some blizzard yesterday. I wasn't able to go to work as the snow on my street was so high that cars were stranded. I got to use the snow blower for the first time this season, so that was a lot of fun. I could go for another snow day, but I am at work right now so it is too late.

    Have a great day folks.

Physics update kiddies: forget everything you
learned about the periodic table of elements.
    Particles don't exist!

Every particle is actually a field. The universe is full of fields, and what we think of as particles are just excitations of those fields, like waves in an ocean. An electron, for example, is just an excitation of an electron field.
This may seem counterintuitive, but seeing the world in terms of fields actually helps make sense of some otherwise confusing facts of particle physics.
When a radioactive material decays, for example, we think of it as spitting out different kinds of particles. Neutrons decay into protons, electrons and neutrinos. Those protons, electrons and neutrinos aren’t hiding inside neutrons, waiting to get out. Yet they appear when neutrons decay.
If we think in terms of fields, this sudden appearance of new kinds of particles starts to make more sense. The energy and excitation of one field transfers to others as they vibrate against each other, making it seem like new types of particles are appearing.
Thinking in fields provides a clearer picture of how scientists are able to make massive particles like Higgs bosons in the Large Hadron Collider. The LHC smashes bunches of energetic protons into one another, and scientists study those collisions.
“There’s an analogy that’s often used here,” Carroll said, “that doing particle physics is like smashing two watches together and trying to figure out how watches work by watching all the pieces fall apart.
“This analogy is terrible for many reasons,” he said. “The primary one is that what’s coming out when you smash particles together is not what was inside the original particles. ... [Instead,] it’s like you smash two Timex watches together and a Rolex pops out.”
What’s really happening in LHC collisions is that especially excited excitations of a field—the energetic protons—are vibrating together and transfering their energy to adjacent fields, forming new excitations that we see as new particles—such as Higgs bosons.
Thinking in fields can also better explain how the Higgs works. Higgs bosons themselves do not give other particles mass by, say, sticking to them in clumps. Instead, the Higgs field interacts with other fields, giving them—and, by extension, their particles—mass.
The Higgs boson may be the media darling, Carroll said, but the real star is the Higgs field. It’s the reason the universe looks the way it does.
Carroll’s complete talk and subsequent Q&A session are now available for viewing on Fermilab’s YouTube channel.
