Wait a minute, I believe Ken Dryden was/is a lawyer.
Remember that its the owners who had selected Bettman to represent them.
I don't like him, as he knew very little about hockey when he first started, but thats not why the owners wanted him.
Notice how he was very sombre (had his tail between his legs) when Atlanta, again, had to move their franchise to a Canadian city again.
The sport of hockey is now become BIG business. Look at how many times they change the logos on jerseys. All for the mighty buck.
As for the expansion from 6 to 12 teams back in the late 60's, it helped many a player (my cousin included) but it was the WHA that got players their huge amount of money. That was the main reason my cousin jumped to the WHA played with some young kid named Wayne Gretzky, LOL.

You make some excellent points owdatoon and I cannot argue with you at all on the points you raise.
Yes, hockey today is all about big business these days and the almighty dollar rules.
Dryden is a lawyer (good old Hamilton boy as Don Cherry would say), but he was also a terrific NHL goalie. I`d be willing to bet that Bettman has never worn a pair of skates. The Atlanta move to Calgary looked very good on Bettman. He is such an arrogant individual and personally, I have no use for him as you can probably surmise by my comments about him
If you don't mind me asking, who is your cousin?
Don't respond if it makes you feel uncomfortable or alternatively, send me a PM. Just curious. The Toronto and surrounding Southern Ontario area has always had the greatest representation of hockey players in the NHL and has had for many years. If it wasn`t for Southern Ontario, there would not be much of a professional hockey league in North America today.
I lived through all the WHA days and the jumping of leagues by so many of the biggest stars of the day.
No question that the emergence of the WHA elevated the salaries within the NHL as a bi-product.
The NHL players were under paid and taken advantage of the greedy owners of the day back then,
Imagine Gordie Howe getting a team jacket as a bonus for being the leagues best player one year.
I met Howe at a hockey tournament that my son was playing in in Lake Placid about 25 years ago. Very nice man and a true professional. I have admired him for years.
Jack Adams used and abused Howe for years. I'm glad he finally made some real money when he signed on with the Hartford Whalers.
His move also allowed his sons Mark and Marty a chance to play in the big leagues.
Cheers owdatoon, really enjoyed your post and the ability to respond.Last edited by zfurman; Tue, Feb 19th, 2013 at 11:08 AM.
