I figured I would post this question for some feedback...
This week I purchased 2 cans of soup. I used a coupon when I went thru the check out so my out of pocket cost was zero. When I got home I noticed that the soup had expired in August 2008. 2008?!?
My question to my fellow frugal SCers is what would you do?
Return?
Exchange?
Garbage it?
Complain at the store?
Complain to the manufacturer?
Eat it?This thread is currently associated with: N/A

I personally would turf the soup if you are only going to drive back to the store for that, or I would keep the soup and reciept for next time I go for a replacement.

And actually, I would call the company and tell them too....they'll send you a replacement coupon and then you CAN turf the can...

I would definitely let the store know that they have product out on the shelves that's expired especially since it's from last August!

Call the company. Then I would go back to the store and return.

I agree...first call the company, then return it to the store. I just did that with moldy cheese I bought- I called Saputo first, they agreed to replace it for me and sent me a FPC, then I brought it back to Co-op and they replaced it as well.

Yup I'd return or exchange it. But call the company and also let the store know they have expired food on the shelf so they can check the rest of it. So gross.

I had a moldy cheese problem a few weeks ago with BlackDiamond cheese that hadn't been sealed closed properly...I called the mfg and they sent me a replacement coupon, I just got it today.

I wouldn't make a special trip back to the store but next time there I would look on the shelf and see if they are still selling it. If so I would ask to speak to the manager NOT just a stock person and I would point this out, then check it again next time I was in store just to be sure something was done. I also would contact the manufacturer about this and they will probably want UPC and code off can but should send you FPC for product. So in a perfect world the manager should compensate you and the manufacturer as well so you have a win win. Now should you eat it?? Is the can showing any bulging? If it is in good shape I might use it depending on the circumstances. I would not toss the can until I had finished with my complaints though.

It realy isn't the companies fault its the stores just return it next time you go back.
I don't really agree with trying to get it free from the company and the store as theres no need to have both hands in the cookie jar IMO.

Personally, if I got it for free, I wouldn't bother complaining or anything, I would just throw it out. If you do go to the store often, you could talk to the customer service desk with your receipt and ask for an exchange.
I always check expiry dates on things, I don't trust that the stuff they put out hasn't expired yet.

See my thinking with this is that:
A) its not the manufacturers fault
B) i did use a sort of tender to pay for it, even though it wasn't cash
I am going to go to the store and ask for an exchange.
I was wanting to see what others had to say about this situation...and I am not going to eat the soup. It is clam chowder. Old fish? yuck!
Thanks everyone for your input!
