I need help *LOL*
I would like to connect my laptop in the new house wireless

the new house is about 300 feet from the main house it's build with ICF

I have a linksys wrt54g router right now and it can't reach the house

the laptop has wireless n

so I went out and bought the D-link dir-825 router today
I had plans to get the d-link dir-655 (had good reviews) but the sales cleark convinced me otherwise.... argggg
and now I read about the D-Link DIR-825 and the review sucks!

now should I bring it back or try it out?
I really want to be able to connect the laptop in the house that is 300 feet away is that eaven possible?

300 feet is outside the normal range of most consumer wireless devices.

Even if a wireless router is "rated" at 300 feet, you have to consider that range is line of sight - i.e., point-to-point in open air without any structures or obstructions in the way.

Walls, brick, siding, electrical wires, appliances, overhead power lines, lighting, trees, these all can block or seriously degrade the wireless signal.

In some cases you can use another router as a "range extender" - i.e., add another router to join your existing wireless network and itself act as a wireless access point. However in this case, you would have to situate the secondary router or specialized range extender device physically between the houses.

Not very convenient.

What you are probably looking for is not a regular consumer wireless router, but something more like a wireless access point (WAP) - like these:

These offer a greater range and signal strength and also incorporate Quality of Signal (QoS) abilities to compensate for interference. Ideally you would place this device in a window facing the other house.

Yes, these are more expensive, but they achieve what most home routers do not.

Remember, if you use one of these items, to secure the network using encryption (WPA2 recommended).

So yes, I'd take the device back that you purchased if I were in your position.

in the meantime my wrt54g broke *LOL* so I brought back the one I bought and bought the Dlink dir655.
with a teen in the house I needed something fast.

so now I will read more and decide what to do.

oh wen you siad the one has to be placed between houses can this be done with no wire or does it has to be wired?

I fixed my linksys wrt54g I loaded a 3 party filmware in it, it has the dd-wrt in it now...
I did not do much with it just yet, but can I use it somehow for something now?
I'm so prowd of myself for unbricking it

A wireless device used as a range extender will join the main wireless network router itself as a wireless device, just like your computer does. It has only to be plugged into power, but would have to be configured initially through a computer with a direct wired (ethernet) connection.

There are no consumer-grade wireless networking products that I know of that are weatherproof and can be situated outside.

If you were to set up a WAN device instead of a standard wireless router connected directly to your modem, if located in a window facing the other house would have enough power to transmit a signal clearly that far.

Wide Area Network.

Tiger Direct has lots of models, the main difference is that they are just like a regular wireless router except they cover a much larger range.

Scooter, have found out that the d-link dir655 does not let the wrt54g (repeater) arggg
anyhow I will get another wrt54g and go from there.
will report back in about 1 week.
