My mother warns me not to use tampons because of health problems...what exactly are these?

I just find with pads that it can be a pain on the first few days when leakage might occur so I think tampons might be a better solution?

    Hi Blistex,

Your mom's worried about TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). Its pretty rare now a days but here's a link you can check out http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/sexua...girls/tss.html. The best way to prevent TSS is to ' select the ones with the lowest absorbency that can handle your menstrual flow and change them frequently. You can also alternate the use of tampons with sanitary napkins'. Hope this helps

It is pretty low.. It really just comes down to how comfortable you are with taking the risk. If you alternate, I dont think its a big deal. Your mom's probably worried cause it was such a big deal back in the 70's. There's also the Diva cup (not sure what the TSS risk factor is). Many of my friends swear by it www.divacup.com/. Never used it myself though.

My mother was the same! She NEVER allowed me, or my sisters (I have two, each a year apart) to use tampons when we were younger (worred of TSS).... then, my friends mother gave me some, when I was sleeping over, and i NEVER turned back! I simply can't IMAGINE using pads! To each their own.. I just feel cleaner and nicer with tampons However, I only use OB.... I don't like aplicators and find OB easier, and better to use (And smaller to stick in your pocket!

I also hear that the tampon might devirginizes a girl too, is that true?

I use panty liners in the days leading up to my period and then tampons, I did not use tampons for the longest time. even though my mom did. I use tampax compact.

An applicator? Lol... "Tampon applicators may be made of plastic or cardboard, and are similar in design to a syringe. The applicator consists of a bigger tube and a narrower tube----"yada yada yada. basically, the APPLICATOR "shoots" the cotton bit of the tampon inside of you.... I use OB tampons WITHOUT an applictor, which require simply your fingers to insert.

Even my HUSBAND knows what an applicator means, in reference to a tampon!

Ok, pictures HERE----> (Non-graphic of course! simply explanations of tampons!)

"No. Using a tampon has no effect on your "virginity". The only way by society's standards to "lose your virginity" is to have vaginal intercourse with a man. Here's a site with more info: www.youngwomenshealth.org/tampon.html "

    And another--- http://www.obtampons.com/know_01.shtml

    Does this help?
