All Via Rail Service Halted As Engineers Strike

Passengers across the country have been left scrambling after more than 300 Via Rail locomotive engineers walked off the job at noon Friday.

The company, which carries nearly 12,000 people a day has cancelled all service, leaving bus lines and other modes of transportation to pick up the slack.

Hopes of averting a strike were quashed when talks between the company and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference union broke down earlier in the morning.

Anticipating the deluge, buses were on hand at Union Station to replace the trains that were set to leave from the busy hub.

But while those heading to more popular destinations could find other ways to get there, the strike is expected to make it more difficult to get to outlying areas.

A federal mediator had been appointed to assist in the negotiations, which were being held in Montreal.

The engineers have been without a contract since Dec. 31, 2006.

wow, toronto-mtl is $175 round trip on VIA 1 class.

Anyone book any trips?

I just booked Kitchener-Montreal round trip, 60% off and and then another 10% off with visaperks. Now I just have to book hotels and figure out what I am going to do, please PM me if you know of any good attractions in Montreal.
