They've been around for awhile. But technically not free - would you not tip the guy quite a lot for getting you 8 blocks? That's pretty far.

when I was in TO I had no idea what to tip taxi drivers LOL I felt really stupid...

oh yeah, I've taken one of these eco cabs before!! Since the service is 'free' you still tip the driver...and definitely way more than a normal cab. For all the way across downtown with 2 people, we tipped the guy $15 bucks. Not an easy job. We got free cans of nestea though. :D
Cheaper to take the subway or streetcar.
