Shoppers Drug Mart: Changes to the Optimum Card in July

So I shopped at SDM today.. I know shock horror, anyway, the cashier told me there are changes coming to the Optimum card as of July, and to check out the website for more information. I am assuming they are changes the points values... I looked at the site and didn't find anything, just wanted to post this for all you SDM lovers who might be interested.

Maybe they're giving us MORE pts.! Optimistically speaking but that's probably not the case. Thanks for the head's up - we may have to use up the points we've got or work hard to get current value for the ones we have or something - antennas up folks!

AAah I hope they're not catching on to buying the SDM gc's for points! AHHHH the horrors, then there's NO point in shopping there!

Here's an excerpt from the Globe and Mail quoted in another thread...

"The IFRS change also removes a tool from Shoppers’ quiver in boosting sales in any given quarter. Currently, if the chain runs a promotion and ratchets up the number of points it awards for a sale, it’s also boosting current revenue – and further improving comparisons. "

So that may explain the 20X points and then big redemptions back to back--to get a pile of points (and revenue) on/off the books in Q2

What's basically happening is that the point levels are going up, and the dollar amounts are also changing. The highest now will be $170, for 90,000 points, the lowest will be $10 for 8,000. If you go to your local shoppers, you can ask for a booklet that lets you know about all changes occurring. Sorry I dont have all the exact values.

ALSO, as of December 31st, 2016, the optimum card is no longer going to be used and is the last day for you to collect points. From there on, you have until March 31, 2017 to use up all the points and for any shoppers to honour your card.

Definitely, they aren't doing these to be nice.

Also someone else was mentioning earlier that their stock is falling, if I read correctly, that's why all the bonus redemptions and promos lately too, more than last year.

This is not good news. Does this mean that we should redeem this weekend? I was saving my points for the Fall for a notebook, etc., but if this comes into effect in July, should we cash out now???? Does anyone know the date when this takes place? Thanks.

Someone on another board posted that the points required to redeem at each level will increase (e.g., 8000 instead of 7000 points for the lowest level).

No need to panic.

I think the point values will change, I doubt it will be that much of a significant change.... if you are really worried, you may want to redeem soon, depends on how much points you have.
