its probably free when you make a purchase there...otherwise everyone will just show up for the freebie

The cashier will ring in the purchase. When a registered card is swiped, it'll subtract the total amount and show as 0.00 on their screen. Otherwise, if card isn't registered, it'll deduct the dollar value from the card like normal.

Nope, it is free without any purchase but you do need to have a registered card to get it. I think some stores make up their own rules just like when you try to use a regular coupon and tell you that you need to have funds on your card which is BS. They don't know how to use their system. An example is the yonge and college starbucks where the cashier tried a couple of times and then told me that I needed to have funds on the card. I did add $5 to get the free thing. But on the same empty card another store was able to swipe my card and print the complete transaction without asking me to add money on previous promotion.

Bah. I registered my card but they "recycled" it when it was empty. At least I think it was that card.
