A family member said he is aware that the hydro utility will use a customer's wi-fi connection to monitor daily usage and so customer pays for that computer use plus the electric bill. Does hydro tell people that?

Besides, if you have a/c and a smart meter, chances are your a/c will at hydro's control during heat waves to manage power use on the grid. If someone in your household depends on the a/c at a setting for medical use, you might want to find out how to get around that--negative option on the a/c temp. control. If you don't have a/c--one less thing to worry over.

Best thing to do is look up your hydro utility's website and pore over all the information and details. There has to be a way to at least be on record with your concerns.

How exactly would Hydro bypass your security settings on your wifi connection?

They can only reset your a/c if you sign up for one of their FREE programmable thermostats. It was tempting because we would be able to log onto a website and adjust our thermostat from anywhere but we decided to not get it because my elderly MIL lives with us and one person meddling with our heating and cooling is plenty.

The worst thing is that power during the day is double what it is in the evening and overnight. I find I am now up till all hours during the week and all weekend running the washer, drier and dishwasher etc. I'd much rather spend that precious time with my kids but we just can't afford for the bill to be double.

Timers....set them and leave them. Internal or external to the applicence. The cost is mininal to the time you spend.
