July Food Bank Challange

After reading, and posting in some threads over the last few days, I am going to issue a challenge to all my fellow couponers here on SC. We all live in different parts of Canada, so together we can help out many, many families and individuals in our great country.

The challenge is this:

For us couponers who could afford to spend $10 .... within the month of July, spend that $10, along with some coupons and try and get as much food as possible, and take the items you have purchased and drop it off at your local foodbank. As Fallenpixels posted in another thread, foodbanks are in desperate need of proteins. Canned fish, canned meats and such. If you can't purchase those items, items such as soups, cereals and jams and peanutbutter are also great items. You don't even need to spend $10, $5, $4, $3, or anything. It all helps out.

Take a picture and post it here. Lets see what we can do together as an SC community to help those less fortunate than us. Good luck everyone, I look forward to seeing the mountain of food we can amass with just $10 each.

I've been doing this on and off since I started couponing in January - (I tried to do $10/month but some months were just so hectic that I was lucky to be able to get coupons together for my groceries- let alone for others) but this month I did 1 box of cereal + 3 boxes of juice bags (kool-aid jammers) + changed things up a little and did a donation to my local Animal Shelter -- $10 of wet cat food, 2x 8 pack of paper towel + 2x jugs of bleach (all per their wishlist that they have on their website). It was nice to change it up a little but still give back (Plus the extra donations this month (approx $25 worth of stuff) makes up a bit for what I've missed in the past couple months lol.

I have been doing this monthly since January. There is only so much two people need and I love couponing so much that I take $20 and coupons and drop of groceries. People at my job know I do this so they bring in coupons they won't use. My co-workers also give me their recycles and now the janitor saves me any that get put in the garbage. So this month I had approximately $60 to use for my donation. I bought 21 boxes of cereal, 16 pkgs of side kicks, 10 cans of tuna, 6 cans of luncheon meat, 12 cans of beans, 5 cans of stew, 5 cans of beans/weiners. 12 cans of assorted soups, 6 cans of alphagetti, 12 boxes of mac and cheese, a friend gave me 10 degree deodorant. Sorry I do not have a pic, I just dropped it off this am. They asked my husband what church was doing the drop off and he said it is just my wife, and she replied, oh the coupon lady. It is so much fun to fill the trunk of my car each month and gives you that warm fuzzy feeling.

My kids had vacation bible school last week. They were asked to bring in food for the food bank. On the Thursday the kids were all asked to bring as much as they could and the classroom that brought the most in would win. And my daughter's class won! She was so excited.
So we donated:
1 box of Raisin Bran cereal, 1 jar of Ragu, 1 2Kg bag of sugar, 8 cans of soup, 1 Rice Krispie granola bars, 2 Goldfish coloured, 2 cans water chestnuts, 2 Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce, 1 Bretons crackers and I think that's it. Might have missed something. No picture though as I didn't think about it.
I will try to put some more together for the food bank and drop it off. The other stuff we donated was from out of our stash. But maybe I will see what I can do with $10. Would help if Wally would have the Nexxus shampoo in. LOL.

Thank you everyone who is doing this. Anyonne that donated in Jult, can you please leave a specific list here as to item and quantity, and I can add it to the list of items we have so far. Thanks everyone for being so generous.

I have been doing this all year as well. So far to date the value I would est. to be over $300, but this month my list is as follows

10 x resolve = free
13 x dove body wash = $5
8 x dove deodorant = $ 5
5 x packages of dove soap = $ 4
6 x cereal = $ 13
18 x toothpaste = $ 11
10 x tooth brushes = $ 7
7 x Dish soap = $ 7

I found some awesome sales on my last 2 shopping trips. Now to keep tradiing for the coupons to make it easeir to help supply our food banks

Great deals get me excited about shopping, but when I know that I just got much needed products to help out our food bank, I bounce out of the store. My hubby thinks I am nuts

I do this all year round, and drop it off either at the grocery store or my son takes it to the church where he works - they have a weekly collection for the food bank.
I've never kept track of items I've donated - it's always just been what we are able to give, and not always just the cheapest or free items. Some donations are larger, and sometimes smaller, but I know it all helps.
Kudos to everyone for helping out as much as they can.

In the past I have spoken to Safeway & Thrifty's and they donate to the food banks all the time as well. The economy is scarey hey!!! I had a thought that if every person that was employed gave one item to a food bank - the food bank would fill up quickly!!

The totals are climbing daily, great job everyoone. I've updated the running total to post 13 in the brag section and post #43 in the tea room. This total is for things we have donated for the month of July. If you have donated your items to the food bank and day in July, let me know with a post and I will update out our total. The news has been covering the foodbanks and showing the pictures of the empty shelves.

Calgary area foodbanks donated 32 huge containers to the Kelowna foodbank and they sshared it with 5 other area foodbanks as the shelves there were almost completely bare. We can help, even 1 item can feed some.

I totally agree with your mission (it is so important to give out to those in need - I have learned many important things from SC - life is about sharing. giving & caring - it's not about greed) I'm going to come up with a plan to make a difference.
