I also wondered what they were talking about. Turns out they are referring to White Swan brand paper made by Kruger pulp and paper in Quebec. Certainly not a good comparison for them, White Swan is made up from recyled enviormentally friendly materials. Sort of like comparing a Corvette to an Austen mini Cooper!

I was wondering about the "bird brand" too it's White Swan
it's comparing apples to oranges in a way They should use the "kitten brand" as a better comparison!

Considering the price difference, Charmin should be a heck of a lot better than White Swan!
So many coupons....so little time!

their mascot is a bear, so maybe instead of saying "better than the other leading brand", they thought they were clever calling it 'bird' brand, since their bear is stronger than a bird?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kruger_Products
Under products it says :
- White Swan napkins, bathroom tissue, paper towels and facial tissue (value brand; referred to by some competitors as the "bird brand"[2])

Thanks but their reference just sends people to the Charmin page where it just says "bird brand" and doesn't explain it by name. Their Wiki reference is just assuming

I find a lot of ads for P&G products where they compare to another brand are quite meaningless. Anyone every notice the fine print on the Dawn ads, the ones where they are washing dishes from the poutine stall? It says "*compared to the leading non-concentrated brand". Well come on, of course one drop of concentrated dishwashing liquid (i.e. Dawn), will go further than one drop of non-concentrated dishwashing liquid. This is comparing apples to pineapples, just like the Charmin commercials comparing to White Swan.
(That said, we are a Charmin household. Dh has asked me not to buy other brands maybe six or seven years ago. Last year I tried Royale for a while cause they have such fab coupons and great sales at SDM, which gets to the $50 mark for 20x points, but he really, really didn't like it. So back to just Charmin for us.)
