Looks like you can. But I guess you have to convince them, it was not cosmetic & was medically necessary ( not sure what the criteria for that is ). A bit vague & ambiguous, as you or your Ortho might think it was & the CRA might not.

Ask your Ortho. And claim it any ways. I guess the worse they can do is deny you. No harm in asking. Just keep your receipts for records & scan/copy them for your records. Not like you are committing fraud or anything .

Orthodontic work including braces paid to a medical practitioner or a dentist. Expenses for purely cosmetic procedures are not eligible.

Are you talking about claiming it on your CRA tax return as a medical expense ? or just in general through your assistance program or from your gov. agency

You can put it on a tax return, I did this for my kids and then you at least get the tax back on the $$$

OP: I got braces at the age of 37 and because it was not medically necessary, but it was cosmetic only, NO, I was not able to claim it.

And if I did, I needed a Dentist to go on record and say yes, this person has a valid medical reason for getting braces. Period.

Just ask yourself, if it is not Medically necessary and cosmetic only are you OK claiming this expense knowing that anyone can be audited at any given time and then asked to give proof that you needed it for medical reasons? It just not worth it!!!!
