No, it's about calculating how much you are saving vs how much time you spend doing it.

If I managed to save $100/week that would be awesome. But I think it's unrealistic to think anyone actually "saves" $100/wk by using coupons and getting bargains. $100 per month to me seems realistic.

I've been keeping a calendar since Jan 1/12 to show the breakdown of how much we save (or get free because even if it's saved it seems to vanish) by using couon, redeeming points through loyaly programs and utilizing freebies/samles. I put a dollar value on all freebies based on how much I would pay for the exact item on sale, for example the recent kellogs promo I would value the cereal at 3.00 a box (on sale) and the snack bars at 2.00 making that paticular freebie a $13.00 value.

For the month of January I calculated $253.10 of saving from coupons alone and an additional $171.00 of items free obtained through samples/freebies/redeeming loyalty points for GC's. That's a grand total of $424.10 of bonus money in one month alone.
Not quite $250.00 a week like the article suggests but still pretty impressive.

i think it's a bit skewed.. when you add in time spent on forums, time spent looking for coupons, time spent on trades... it's just like extreme couponing sure they say they saved 98% BUT now much did they spend on the clipping service, how much are they put for postage, how much are they really out for all the magazines/newspapers bought, and ink for the printer, how much of that product would they normally buy/use.. going in and doing a 45 min shop and using $200 worth of coupons saying that they made $200 in less then an hour is a bit skewed way to look at it

Me too, I do about $150 month. That's if I add all actual coupons + rebates used.

I don't know how they calculated $100 week savings, maybe if I add up the highest possible shelf price for all items bought on sale+coupon, maybe I'd get closer to 100. They may be embellishing the savings a bit in the article, but still - I think it's worth it for me.

I feel like I should add my big savings is more then a typical household since we are a house of 7 people we naturally do more shopping.
