Sounded good til the screen came up saying it was for a 'free trial'. Yikes! Has anyone done this before - is it easy to get out of, or is there tons of spam to come?

Most of these free stuff websites do come with spam, but that is the price to pay for something that is free, so why not open a new free email account , this way you won't have to deal with finding your private messages from friends and family amongst all the junk mail.
Sometimes free stuff is worth getting hit with spam

Thanks for posting this. Last time it was around I did try it, and though no actual coupons were forthcoming, the spam was non-stop. And no matter how many times we "contacted customer service", never got any response. I will try again at the new junk email address however.

Tks - good idea about the setting up a spare email acct. I have done that with some of the coupons sites and you wouldn't beleive the amount of spam I get.
