I've heard the atkins diet isn't so great, with the increased amounts of protein and all.

Is that no carb diet? I did a whole report on how bad that is for ya.. don't do it.. Southbeach allows you at least some carbs.

Only because it starves you .. did you know your brain needs glucose to run? You dont get that from meats, or from burning fat... you brain can run on ketones in an 'emergency' but not as well.... fyi Ketones are what give you 'diet breath' in that case.... so if you don't want your brain, sure go ahead. Generally speaking (and I'm sure bctea could speak to this better than I can), diets don't work. They confuse and mess up your metabolism, and if former eating habits are resumed after a diet, the weight will be regained - sometimes more weight will be gained than was initially taken off. It's better to learn about healthy eating and include at least moderate exercise in your daily habits. High-protein diets put excessive stress on the kidneys, not to mention the issues that bctea has already raised. Many women who are chronic dieters will have a variety of vitamin and mineral deficiencies depending on the foods they exclude - iron deficiency (leading to anemia) and calcium deficiency (which can lead to osteoporosis) are common in chronic dieters.

While there is a lot of pressure on women to be a certain body weight and shape, such preoccupation very often leads to eating disorders of varying severity. Accept yourself (and your friends) for who you/they are (there is a large genetic component to body weight and shape) and try to live the happiest, healthiest life that you can!

Your best bet is just to start eating healthy and doing some sort of exercise..that will go a long way.
