The Wecan Food Basket Society is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing affordable food security to community members throughout the Edmonton area. Food Security is more than having enough food to meet every person’s daily nutritional needs; it also means having a variety of fresh food to fuel a healthy lifestyle. With the Wecan Food Basket Society, families and individuals in the Capital Region can buy fresh meat and produce each month for more than 25% off retail grocery store prices. The Food Basket program is open to everyone because we all have a right to proper nutrition at an affordable price. The Wecan Food Basket Society – It’s not a food bank; it’s food in the bank!

Our participants simply buy a $5 annual membership to join Wecan. By the first Friday of every month, our members place orders for the food baskets. We offer three kinds of orders: a fresh meat order for $12, a fresh produce order for $8 and a complete meat and produce order for $20. A meat order contains 3 cuts of fresh meat, and a produce order consists of 3 seasonal fruits and 3 seasonal vegetables. Members can order more than one meat, produce or complete food basket.

The Wecan Food Basket Society runs on the strength of its many volunteers. Most of our volunteers are members – making them participants – not just recipients of the program. Other individuals choose to volunteer to become more involved in their community. And volunteering looks great on your résumé! Members are not required to volunteer.
