So I went to SDM early this morning to take advantage of the $10 or $20 dining card they were giving out if you spend at least $50 or $75. I was planning on getting $75 worth of stuff, then redeeming 40,000 points to pay for it. So here i was with my cart of diapers ($75 worth, which is 5 bags of 60 diapers each), gonna pay at the cashier, she rang me up and i said i'm redeeming my points to pay for this purchase so i can get the dining card. THEN she said "You can only get the $20 dining card if you pay $75 before tax, out of your own pocket, in addition to redeeming from the points." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This was news to me, as i did not see anything in their flyer or in-store that excludes use of points to pay for the purchase and get the dining card. So basically, what they want is for you to buy $150 worth of stuff, redeem 40,000 to pay for $75, then pay $75 out of your own pocket????????????????? Has anyone had any similar experiences?

Yes, you would have to 'spend ' ($$$) cash, rather than redeeming points. It says it right on the email I got, which is the same on their site.
This is what it says - It's the first sentence after the asterisk:
*Offer valid on the purchase total of eligible products after discounts and redemptions and before taxes.

Thanks for clarifying! I've been stewing about this all day.

SDM and I got off to a mediocore start... the good deals have twists and turns and then, usually, in the end.. it's not such a great deal, lol.

yes, any those bonus gc they gave, should be after redeem,

eg, if you buy $75 thing and you redeem 50, them you can not get any gc

if you buy 100 and redeem 50, them you qualify 10 gc not the 20

it is true for all shoppers, not wire thing, hope this will make u feel better

Don't feel bad, I'm sure it's happened to a lot of us. We sort of get led down the garden path and then OOPS! Maneuvering your way through this house of mirrors (a.k.a. the Shoppers Optimum Points Program) can be tricky, even for the veterans.

Like... differentiating between "regular" points and "bonus" points, getting regular points for buying SDM giftcards but not other retailer giftcards (usually but not always), having the cashier punch in the correct code for your coupons, doing a SCOP after you've done a bonus redemption, customers that have to explain the rules to the staff, being an "invited" bonus points coupon user (or not), getting different bonus redemption amounts depending on which province you live in, points awarded now, points awarded later, service charges on SDM giftcards (after 12 months on non use), buying giftcards with giftcards, achieving "PLUS" status to get 10,000 point kickbacks, purchasing eligible products, some conditions apply... see cashier for details... HAH!!

Read the fine print, ask questions if you're not sure (call SDM customer service) and stay tuned to Smartcanucks because we're always discussing these things and learning from one another.

It's still my favourite points program right now in spite of the complication. The reason so many of us stick with it is because it can be very rewarding if you play the game right, avoid the pitfalls and see the right times to pounce on those narrow windows of opportunity. Welcome to the club.

Thank you so much for all the info!My head is spinning from all these rules and restrictions. Hopefully I don't have another experience like that again.
