SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
Significant snowfall, strong winds, and blowing snow expected Monday and Tuesday.
A low pressure system off the American Seaboard is forecast to intensify as it approaches the Maritimes tonight. The low will track southeast of Newfoundland on Monday and Tuesday before moving out to sea Tuesday night.
Snow is expected to begin over southeastern Newfoundland Sunday night and spread to the remainder of the Island on Monday. For the Burin, Bonavista, and Avalon Peninsulas, snow is expected to transition through ice pellets and freezing rain to rain on Monday, before changing back to snow Monday night. Precipitation is expected to remain as snow for the rest of the Island.
Strong northerly winds gusting up to 100 km/h are also expected with this system on Monday and Tuesday. The strong winds are expected to combine with fresh snow to cause near zero visibilities in blowing snow.
Strong onshore winds along the east and northeast coasts from a low pressure system that is heading out to sea will diminish tonight. The strong onshore winds will redevelop on Monday as the low pressure system approaches Newfoundland. These onshore winds will continue to cause extensive ice buildup or significant pressure on Monday and Tuesday. This is expected both along the coastline and in the bays, especially north of Cape Race.
Environment Canada Meteorologists will continue to monitor this system and provide further information as it becomes available.
