Is Recipt Mandatory?

I have a question. Is it mandatory for a retailer to give a receipt for every purchase?

i would say yes in case you have a problem and have to return the item you would need proof of puchase

I googled around and just could not find this information! Odd, huh? The only place I could find anything about what a receipt should contain is on a SCOP information site.

So I don't know the answer.....

you might find that some places won't give you a reciept if you pay cash. they don't actually punch in the sale, they just keep their till open, and hand you the change you should get back.
in that case, they're scamming their taxes and not showing their total sales accurately when doing taxes.

I personally don't think it's manditory. That is based on experience and and info I've gathered in my lifetime, lol. Could be wrong, tho. With holding a receipt upon request could be a diff story.

Some places will state (by sign or verbal, whatever) that if a receipt is not given, then blah blah happens.. a free this or that. Marble Slab (ice cream) has a sign that if you are not asked if you want a receipt, you get a free ice cream! I'm actually shocked they've always asked me.. and I go there somewhat often, haha!! Now, if only other stores would stand behind their voluntary actions... like SCOP!!.. the world would be a better place.

you need proof that you purchased something and you gave them your $$$$ so they need to give you proof of that!

Manchu Wok has a sign on their register that if they don't give you a receipt right then when you are there they give you your meal for free.I've always gotten a receipt so no free meals for me yet.

There are some places with signs up, like someone said at Manchu Wok.
We went to Square One and I had my hubby using his card over at the Chinese place, while I got us a drink at KFC (much cheaper, and refills) using the cash we had left. So I got back and asked him how much it was, and he was like, "About $9." So I asked for the receipt so I could keep track, and he said they didn't give him one. And so I went back up, saw the sign, mentioned it, and the manager said you had to mention it before you left the register.

If they don't give you a receipt, it will also be on your bank statement or credit card. I don't pay with cash because I like have a record of where my money is going.

I like to keep them for about a week, that way I don't have to send my husband to the bank just to see what we've spent. Because we only go to the bank once a week. And statements in the mail are only once a month.

A few years ago when I worked at a small fast food joint the pos terminals were quite old and didn't have machines that printed receipts (they didn't accept credit or interac either). Every once in a while we would hand write a receipt, if requested. My manager told the staff there was no law saying to give a customer a receipt, but only if requested.

Some Wendy's will give you a receipt and some Wendy's won't because they don't want to give out free hamburgers. On the back of the receipt, if you go and fill out their survey (takes about 5 minutes) you get a code to fill out on the back of the receipt and redeem for a free hamburger.
