"Stories, like people and butterflies and songbirds' eggs and human hearts and dreams, are also fragile things, made up of nothing stronger or more lasting than twenty-six letters and a handful of punctuation marks. Or they are words on the air, composed of sounds and ideas-abstract, invisible, gone once they've been spoken-and what could be more frail than that? But some stories, small, simple ones about setting out on adventures or people doing wonders, tales of miracles and monsters, have outlasted all the people who told them, and some of them have outlasted the lands in which they were created."

A good friend will bail you out of jail, a true friend will be sitting beside you saying "Damn we screwed up" (my most favorite one ever!)
If at first you don't succeed, then sky diving is not for you!

There are different versions of this one around:
"You've got to keep an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out."

I have a whole book of quotes that I write down by hand (remember handwriting?) when I come across them but one simple one that I don't have written down is from my late stepfather. Whenever something didn't work out or I didn't get something I wanted he often said this to help get some perspective:
"Well... it's better than a kick in the *ss!"

Here's one from my late FIL - In order to train a dog you first have to be smarter than the dog!
