As far as asking about the bag, they have to - they are trained to ask if you want a bag and for someone like myself who brings reusables, I am glad they ask because once they use the bag for me and then take the item out to put in my reusable, they no longer use the bag for another customer because it has been used or isn't on the rack.

In some municipalities (esp Toronto) SDM has to charge for a bag by local laws and therefore has to ask as well before charging, so its easier to train everyone the same.

I don't have major issues at SDM - one of the store employees (not the actual cashier) mentioned there was a limit on an item I was buying which wasn't advertised as a limit (they do say they can limit any product) but I said I was buying 3 shampoo and 3 conditioner and he was fine with it. But the cashier didn't even look to see if they were different and happily put through my coupons on them without a comment

I think many of us have had French coupon issues though, I would think it would be better in Ottawa, if I have one I really want to use, I try to use it with an identical English one and if they still fuss, remind them its an official language and ask if there is a French speaking employee to check it

Even though I'm in Ottawa most of the time I only use french cpns if I have an identical english one. I try to make it as easy as possible (cos as we all know, there's enough problems using coups anyway) so never use french only unless it's a HV coup for something I really want. It's crazy that in the capital city of a bilingual country french should be a problem.
