My husband actually told me what he would like for Christmas this year, snowshoes. My only problem is what kind should I get? I realize that wooden ones are traditional but I think that the streamlined "newer" ones are the way to go. Any help would be appreciated because Wednesday the 22nd is the day I plan to go shopping. Canadian Tire and TSC Stores have them on sale and Welbeck Sawmill has the wooden ones on the shelf. Anyone with experience in this matter would be of great help or anyone who would care to comment either way would be wonderous. Thanks in advance.

yikes! I looked up snow shoes reviews out of curiosity and there are lots out there! here is a link but not sure it will help or hurt. http://www.trailspace.com/gear/snowshoes/
I am hoping there is someone who has snowshoes on here that can help you maybe from personal experience? what is funny is that we have snow for like 6 months and I don't think many people here know a lot about snow shoes? but I could be wrong. Please take a moment to visit my blog! www.heatherv11.wordpress.com

I snowshoed pretty much all my life with the wooden ones. But I tried the new kind a couple of years ago and absolutely loved them! It was so much easier to step in them because they aren't nearly as bulky as the other ones. They are designed so that they will still hold you up, so don't worry about that. I don't actually own a pair though, so I can't comment much on the best brand to purchase. Good luck!

I remember using them in school and they were always too big and everyone fell everywhere! Then they would get us to race from one side of the field to another, never gonna happen again! lol I wish I could help

My mom and dad use theirs everyday. They got them at Costco last year.

The metal ones are style everyone is buying now...height and weight has a factor in the size you buy. Canadian Tire or Sport Chek are two good places to look.

I would recommend the new snowshoes simply because they are easier to use, especially for hiking in the wilderness. With the older version snowshoe you are limited to a wide trail, where the new ones allow a hiker to go almost anywhere. If you husband wants a pair, I would also buy yourself a pair if you are into hiking....it's a great way to spend a nice winter day.

Thanks to everyone who submitted comments and suggestions to my thread. Amazingly great advice and my husband is very happy, thanks to you all. He totally enjoys the gift of new trail snowshoes and trekking poles. The smile on his face was a terrific gift to me on X-mas morning. If I ever need advice on anything again I will not think twice to ask the wise folks of this community. Big hugs to all.

I'm so happy your DH loved the new snowshoes. Did you get a pair for yourself? At the rate the snow is falling here, it would probably be wise for me to get a pair too!!!
