Microsoft Office has always been free to try, however the Microsoft link is
http://www7.buyoffice.microsoft.com/...&culture=en-CA
Not:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/try/
Also if you want a free version of office (never tried it but know people that have) it's called "Microsoft Open Office"

You made a small mistake; Open Office is not made by Microsoft but by a team of independent programmers (like Firefox, Ubuntu, etc).
It is free to use (without any restriction) and available for any OS (Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, etc)

Word is part of office. If you want to have one that is free try the openoffice one posted above. I use it and it works fine.

The .exe part of the program worries me as the front part looks like it could be a product key, but keys don't have .exe in them. Good that you decided not to open it just be safe until you verify its validity.
