After the Kraft Peanut Butter Cookie Fiasco just before Christmas (and yes, the incident does merit the capital letters), Kraft sent me 3 coupons for free peanut butter (up to $5.49 each). Of course, after the disaster we had, I don't think I'll be eating peanut butter for a few years... I kind of wonder if they sent me peanut butter coupons to mock me!

Anyway, other people still eat peanut butter, and Safeway had B1G1 on 1 Kg jars of Kraft Peanut Butter this week, so I used all three of my $5.49 coupons, got 3 jars free from Safeway, and spent $3 for the six jars.

I donated three jars to the food bank right away. My husband still likes peanut butter (ugh!), so I brought three home. He thinks three jars is too much, so more may be going in the donation bin! (Maybe the cookies really got to him, too)

Well, I really love to bake, and at Christmas, I generally make 20-22 different recipes, and double batches at least of everything. I do a lot of baking for different events and family members.

Anyway, I was looking for a good peanut butter cookie recipe. My mother had one, but she passed away this year, and I wasn't able to find it among her recipes. So, I figured I'd try the super-easy peanut butter cookie recipe listed on the jar of Kraft peanut butter. Sometimes my mom did use recipes from product packaging, and since I couldn't find a paper recipe, I thought I'd try it.

Since the recipe made such a small batch, I mixed up two batches. The weird thing about this recipe is that it doesn't use flour. It's mostly peanut butter! I rolled the dough into balls, and put them on cookie sheets. Then I started baking.

By the time the first two cookie sheets came out of the oven, it was evident that the recipe wasn't the same one, but I continued to bake the rest of the cookies I had mixed up. Once the first batch had cooled, my husband and I tried them. They were like mealy cooked peanut butter! They were heavy and not even like cookies! I ended up throwing my cookie out.

Anyway, by the time I was taking the last batch out of the oven, things had gotten worse. Because the cookie recipe had no flour to kind of bind the oils in the peanut butter together, an incredible amount of it had gotten into the air in the house. As I opened the oven to take out the last cookie sheet, it didn't even smell like peanut butter anymore -- the cookies in the oven had taken on an almost Iris-like flower smell.

By then, the air in the house was thick, and my husband and I were having trouble breathing. I was nauseated, and it felt like someone was sitting on my chest (Neither one of us has peanut allergies, either) We had to run fans and open doors because we were concerned that the -30 degree temperature (plus wind chill) outside could cause windows to freeze open from the humidity in the house.

The thing is, I try to make sure our (then eight-month-old) baby isn't in the immediate area when I'm baking with nuts, as I want to avoid accidentally exposing him to allergens. We don't know if he has allergies, and don't want to risk early exposure. He was in his crib sleeping at the time, but our house is small, and the air was thick with peanut everywhere. With the problems my husband and I were having, we were very worried about him. We still were not feeling well when we went to bed. I hardly slept that night, as I was busy checking on the baby and listening to him on the monitor, waiting for any sign of difficulty breathing.

I've never had an experience like this before, and I've done a lot of baking. After my sleepless night, I was upset enough with Kraft to call to complain about their recipe. I really think they need to remove it from their packaging. If anyone with a severe allergy had walked into our house at the time, I'm sure they would have had a reaction. Sometimes families of children with allergies will still use products containing the allergen, taking steps to reduce their child's exposure, but those steps probably wouldn't have helped with this recipe.

Anyway, that was the Kraft Peanut Butter Cookie Fiasco. I'm completely off peanut butter, but I figure that since food banks are always asking for peanut butter, something good might as well come out of the situation!

I've made them before and they were okay. Not the best peanut butter cookie recipe for posting on the container though.

Hmm, I LOVE that recipe! Weird without flour, I know. Maybe it was a bad batch? Good deal on the PB!
