You can get a really good one with $600.
I usually stick with Cannon cameras but that's because I'm looking for ease of use.
futureshop.ca has some good deals.
After you see a model you're interested in, google the model # and see what reviews they've been getting.

Do you have any photography experience?
Unless you’re interested in professional photography, $600 is a lot for a camera. You can buy a high quality camera for taking family and friends photos for ~$300 or even less!
The best two brands for amateur photography seem to be Canon and Sony. I was researching cameras last year so I learned a lot about them… I’ll write a full summary of my findings tonight thilipan

Best website in the world for anyone looking to buy a camera, I can't recommend it enough - http://www.steves-digicams.com. They have the most comprehensive reviews of just about every camera on the marke, and they even show a number of sample photos from that cover almost every situation the camera could be used in.
I used them when I was looking for a camera, and after much reading of reviews I settled on a great camera that was being discontinued at the time (Sony Cybershot DSC-P73) - 4.1 Megapixels and bundled with a case, memory stick and more for just $249 on clearance at Best Buy. A camera I wouldn't have even considered if it wasn't for this website.

Hi.. I just wanted to add that u shouldn't rule out Panasonic. I did a lot of research and comparison for cameras just over a year ago, and found that for quality, service and price (not to mention ease of use), Panasonic was a great purchase.
Make sure that when u are looking to find out if the camera has an internal memory, or if you need to always use the memory cards/sticks.
Its nice not to have to worry about filling the card up and not having a back up!
From a novice point of view, and from working in an industry where I deal with service from Sony, Canon, and Panasonic... make sure you find out about their customer service and warranty policies too. Some of them require that YOU send your unit to them for any warranty work. FYI purchase your camera from a specialized shop... avoid Box stores like Future Shop and BestBuy, they may have prices... but the service isn't always there! [-X
