I'ld like to switch my telus HTC Hero cell phone to Rogers pay as you go seeing as I am a light user and they offer a $100/year pay as you go card.
I've never unlocked a phone, are there any potential damages caused by doing this or is it close to idiot proof?
From what I understand you normally pay a company online $20-$25 for them to give you a code and instructions on how to unlock the phone. Is it that simple after paying the fee?
I'ld like to upgrade the installed version of Android too, the telus site states its only meant for telus phones. Would there be any issues trying to upgrade Android while on a Rogers plan?HealthcareReviews.com rate and review your doctor, hospital, dentist and healthcare professional.

do you mind telling us which city you in? maybe some here knows a good store to unlock.
Unlocking your cellphone does not harm the phone or anything
If you have paypal and a ebay account, you can get an unlock code for 15 -20 or some sore and it comes with instruction.

I used this company:
http://www.mobileincanada.com/
They just need the phones IMEI # (you can type *#06# on the phone to retrieve your IMEI) and then within 30 mins I had a code sent to my email with instructions how to enter it into my phone. Worked perfectly. No fuss no muss..

Really dumb question, I know, but what is the benefit to unlocking your phone? I get that you're not tied to a network anymore, but can you still use the SIM card that you got when you purchased your phone? Are you able to purchase other SIM cards for other networks on their own? What if you're on a contract - does that change?
Thank you!

Personally, I like bringing an unlocked phone when I travel so I can call or text local numbers at local rates (eliminating roaming charges). When I get to my destination, I buy a prepaid SIM card at a grocery or convenience store, top it off with some minutes and use it in my phone.
If you're on a contract, unlocking the phone does not change the contract- you'll still have to pay your cellphone company what you agreed to pay them.

I used mobileincanada to unlock my telus htc hero, worked like a charm, great website service, $20 and 2 hr later I received the unlock code.
I'm going to try the Bell network out, from what I've seen so far the networks are fairly similar with perhaps bell having marginally better coverage here in Nova Scotia. Still sounds like all networks are not very good outside of Halifax city limits.HealthcareReviews.com rate and review your doctor, hospital, dentist and healthcare professional.
