You guys are awesome. Thanks so much.
I hope this is okay to post here. I messaged another SCer, Lynn, who lost her pet not too long ago, and I thought it might make me feel a little less sad to share this with those of you who are interested.

Thanks to all those P&Pers who aren't interested, but are allowing all this encouragement for me & Scooby.

I wrote this a few nights after I lost her:

A part of me died with her.

How can I thank the furry girl who never turned her back on me once in her entire life?
How can I ensure she knows that I love her with all my heart and more, and how can I know she even knows what love is?

How can I come home without the greeting at the door, the wagging tail, the excitement day after day, even if I was only gone for an hour? How do I put into words how deep and excruciatingly painful it feels to lose her and know I will never see her again?

How can I say I want to be selfish, I don’t want her gone, I want her with me, I want her back and choose not to see the arthritis swelling and stiffening her joints, and her slow movement getting up and down from her bed.

How can I call to arrange for my best friend to die? What kind of thanks is that to a companion who never failed me and lived to please me? How will I sing to an empty house, and whose name will I switch out lyrics for now that she is gone? Who will I call by the nickname Scoober, Boogers Doo, Boogerschmidt, Love, Honey, Boo, Scubby Dubby Doo?

Whose black and white whiskers will I kiss when I get home from work, and who’s brown eyes and white eyelashes will stare back at me while I talk about my day?

Who will sit patiently while I talk about harebrained schemes, while I b*tch about the world, while I share my hopes and dreams, and how much I love her. Who will I snuggle with, whose ears will I scratch, who will I tell my secrets to, knowing that she’ll understand but also knowing that she’ll never tell.

Who will be my rock when I fight with my partner, when my family has a falling out, when the world seems overwhelming, when it gets hard to get out of bed and get moving for the day? How do I thank her for so many years of support and love, so many great photographs, memories, birthdays, walks, support during health scares? While many of my humans can do these same things, the bond we had was something unique. Something I will never have again, but something I cherish with all that is left in my heart.

How do I fall asleep at night, picturing her eyes closing as the sedation began to work? How do I know she wasn’t afraid? Or wondering why I was there but not stopping her from feeling so odd. How could I sit beside her as she died?

How can I explain that her body was starting to fight her? That her muscle degeneration and her arthritis couldn’t be improved despite all the money thrown at supplements, pain medication, injections, foam support, bed reconfiguration, water bowls, special effort in feeding, and all the love and snuggles I could muster up for the last 5 years, easily?

How can I tell her that she is just as beautiful now as she was as a plump little puppy with fleas and ticks 13 years ago, how her face showed more and more white hair as the years passed, as she grew into the beautiful little lady she became. How do I put into words how pretty she looked when she laid with her paws crossed, how cute her whiskers and whisker-holes were to me, how I always tried to scratch her ears in just the right way that she liked best.

How can I thank a friend who flawlessly, unfailingly made me smile whenever I spent time with her? And when conversations turned to the eventual talk of her demise, how can I explain that my tears were sadness of losing her and not upset with her?

How can I take back anything unpleasant I said or did over the years? How many more times could I have possibly said “I love you”… because I tried to say it as much as I possibly could, because I meant it and words really could never truly express it.

She was a part of me. She was a huge part of my life. She gave me purpose. She was devoted, unfailing, adorable, sweet, delicate, calm, quiet, loveable, snuggleable, affectionate. She was a great companion, especially when my partner was away to visit family or gone for work. She was always there, always willing to listen. I never needed to reach her on her cell, she was never too busy to talk to me, she never ignored me.

How do I thank such a friend? How do I explain to my family and friends that she was so much more than just a dog; she was my best friend through thick and thin from my first heartbreak to my last love, who never failed to make me smile and instantly change my mood. We had a bond that can’t be described. A friendship for almost half of my life. I think of her as my baby… I still do. Not a normal pet-owner thing.

As I sit here in tears, how do I know she died knowing I loved her, that I did what I thought was best for her, that I didn’t want her to feel any fear or pain. That I cradled her head and tried to stop my tears from dripping on her whiskers, that I tried to reassure her that this was going to make things better and that I was so sorry. So sorry to let her go. So sorry to make that call to the vet. So sorry I couldn’t fix her physically. That despite everything my heart was crying out against, that I still let it happen. And I know it needed to happen.

But how do I cope knowing all these things, all of this, while still feeling a gut-wrenching, horrible, nauseating sorrow to my very core because she is gone. I won’t see her again, and knowing that makes my heart break. I miss my friend. My best friend.

Scooby Doo, your mommy loves you so so so very much. I always will and I will always miss you. I wish you could have seen my engagement, been a part of my wedding, sniffed and licked my babies as they were brought home. I wish you could be beside me always. I wish I believed in heaven, so I could take comfort in the fact that I might see you again.

Scooby Doo…. Thank you. Than k you for all that you are, all that you were, all you represent, all the smiles you encouraged, all the friendship you gave, all the perfect cute furriness and uniqueness that was you. A part of me died with you on Jan. 17, 2010, but I hope that means that you aren’t totally alone.

Thank you so much sweetie. Thanks for getting me through all this and for being there for me. I love you more than any letter or poem could explain.

I will miss you always, I will never forget you, and I will love you for eternity.

Thanks for all the new words yall

Stephanie I believe Scooby knew you gave her the last gift you could give her. You set her free to go to God and be young again with no more ailments, to run and play at the Bridge. I hope Daiquiri and Bijou were there to show her the ropes. I know you will see Scooby again one day in the very distant future and you will cross that bridge together never to be parted again.

    The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together
