Starting School for the first time Possible Support Group :)

So my daughter is 4 will be 5 and the start of January and she is starting school in September I am having a hard time dealing with the fact my baby is going to school. Right now she is a only child so I won't have another to keep me busy.

I went to register her for school today and could not believe the paper work that I had to fill in. And the things that she should know before she starts school.

Anyways I was wondering if there are any other parents our in Smart Canuck Land that there little ones are starting school for the first time. So I have someone to talk to.

Also if your little one is starting school what are you buying them for Kindergarten?? IE: Backpack ect

At my daughter's school for JK the want them to be able to know there whole name, there address, phone number, how to write there name

Holy cow, that's A LOT! I'm not sure my son could write his name when he started school. I wouldn't stress over "what they are supposed to know". EAch kid goes into school with a different skill set. They will learn what they need to know in time. The school should be providing you with a school supply list. It is usually completely ridiculous, so be prepared (I remember my son's first list having 6 glue sticks-6! Like how much glue can one kid go through!)

I have to confess when my son walked through the gate to start school for the first time I cried. He ran off to join some kids to play and never looked back while I sobbed in the car! I think a lot of moms do! Think of this as the beginning of a lifetime of learning for you and for your daughter (and really cute school plays and christmas parties)!

My granddaughter turns 5 in Feb and she was registered to start last week but my DD went in and took her off the list because she is not ready she is very very teeny and one rule was they had to be able to reach the light switch in washroom and she can't do that yet. DD said she wants her to have a good start in school so holding her back will be better for her overall. I'm also thinking its better for mommy because she would really miss her baby.

I was thinking that but when I went to register her they sent home a teddy bear that has no face and her homework before she starts school she has to write her name on the belly of the bear and draw a face on it. I am sure she can do it no problem but it just seems like a lot.

We have started walking to the school every day to get her ready and we are going to take her to the library this week.

All the text says make their first day of school special so we are going to both walk her to school then after school we are planning on letting her decide what we are eating. She really likes to go to restaurants so we may end up at one. Lucky for me she is only going to be at school 1 day for the first week. I don't think I could handle more than that

That is interesting that your granddaughter Tidy. I did not think you could keep them out a year. But I guess there are lots of things that I don't know.

From my understand both JK and SK are optional (at least in Ontario) and that mandatory schooling does not begin until Grade 1.

And they do send a really long list of things your child is supposed to know how to do, but all kids are different. Some can read and write, tell time, and do basic math when they are 4, others can barely tie their shoes or know their last name.

Oh Lora, I so feel for you. I bawled last year at my little ones first day of school. She was the smallest one, and I was so worried about her. She cried, but it was scared tears, then I cried while walking home. But, she hung in there and it opened her up so much. She loved her teacher, and had met a couple little friends that she stuck by. And I'm guessing I will cry again this year as well, but she will be fine.
We had to bring for them a change of clothes, in case of accident or got dirty, a different pair of shoes, lunch, milk money, backpack and lunch bag. I bought her all the little things to start school, and she didn't need any of them. You will do fine, and if you need any support whatsoever, you can give me a shout. Harkatsmom did that for me last year when I was a mess.

Glad to know I am not the only one freaking out about their kid starting school this year. My son who is 3 (he will be 4 at the end of October) is starting JK this September and I've been worried about it for the past year. He has to ride a school bus to school as well so it makes it even harder that I won't be dropping him off (we only have 1 vehicle and my hubby usually has it that early in the morning). The school is so disorganized too. I received a letter from his teacher saying he will be starting school September 10th and attending all day, every other day, on odd numbered days. Well....September 10th is an even number so I'm beyond confused. She also said in her letter to put his bus number on a sticker and put it on his backpack, so when I called the bus company they had no idea what the heck she is talking about (I'm not the only one whose been calling them). So I called the school to find out what's going on, guess what? No answer!

My son is already in school...grade THREE!!!

I did want to say, try and help out with her class if you can. It will let you see how happy she is @ school and you will feel more @ ease. Plus, go to as many events @ school as you can. I did both and am very happy I did. Since my ds has started school I have had a dd and since she has been around I have missed a lot of things I got to do when he 1st started. Hold onto the moments you can.

My babies and 9 at soon to be 12. This is the first yeat that they are going to take the bus to and from school.

They were at their father's last week (French school started on Aug 26th) so I am staring work late on Tue, Wnd, Thr, and Fri to make sure they can wake-up, make breakfast, brush teeth, and get out the door in time without my help (nagging). At least I get to sleep in too.

my first is starting school in september! I"M WAYYYY BEYOND worried , now i'm just panicing...

there are ALL these different scenarios going on in my mind of ALL the things that could go wrong- what if she hurts herself in the playground, what if she feels left out in school, what if she encounters a bully,AND with all the child molesters out there... i'm seriously having sleepless nights these days as september is approaching.

regarding bus numbers. The schools number their own buses. Say they have 5 buses picking up at a school, so 1-5. After school ends you line up in the bus lines and wait for the bus. so if you on bus one, you wait in the bus 1 line. the numbering of buses doesnt have anything to do with the bus company, its simply to keep organizationn in the school. so they would be the ones to tell you which #.

Thanks, that's what I kinda figured after speaking with the bus company. I called the school yesterday and spoke with the new secretary (it was her very first day on the job) and she wasn't much help either. I am just going to bring him to school on his first day and talk to his teacher to clear it all up.
