Guys.. my dog is fat.

I need your help. I need to find a good brand of dog treats that are LOW FAT. He's over weight. He's supposed to be 7lbs and he's now pushing 14-15.
Something that can be bought at like Pet Smart or Pet Value. I already have the fruits/vegi's down, but I want something else, because I don't want to carry a bag of blueberry's everywhere in my purse ()

my dog is too...she is supposed to be 9-10 lbs and weighs 17lbs and is on a vet diet...but the vet said that small dogs only need to eat 1/3 of a cup of any food twice a day, no more..and you can give your dog PURE pumpkin, thats very good for them recommended by my vet..you buy a can of pure pumpkin (nothing added, and not pumpkin pie filling) and you replace a third of whatever food you give them with the pumpkin twice a day at feeding time...so if you feed your dog 1/3 cup of food in the morning, then 1/3rd of the 1/3 cup will be pumpkin...

Since your dog can't walk because of health problems, this should work good...my dog got fat sneaking cat food, which is a big no-no...so now we have a baby gate up so the dog can't go where the cats eat.

I can send you a recipe for liver-bits from my vet, its real people food quality and you bake it and them break into bits and keep extras in the freezer...they are like tiny cracker/cookies and easy to carry.PM me if you want the recipe.

Is he eating dry kibble? If so, put him on can food (or preferably make your own) Kibble makes a lot of dogs fat.

sorry. can't hep.. my dog gets his food only.. no treats.. I think a box of milk bones have lasted us a year.lol

Some companies manufacture treats specifically for training, making them low-calorie, low-fat yet still as enticing as possible. (Charlee Bear® treats and Kong® TOTs are examples.) String cheese is routinely recommended as tasty, relatively low-fat, low-cal and easy to break into tiny bites. These can all be good choices.


Worth a try, and you can cut into pieces and freeze the rest...

So does Sparky, I usually give him the sliced cheese, but that gets expensive lol !

My brothers girlfriend got Sparky some Cesar Softies from the US and they're 15 calories each !

Pet smart does have high quality, no filler food specially for over weight toy dogs, can't remember what it is but I picked it up for my Chihuahua once. I don't think I'd do a total all raw food/wet food diet because the kibble is better for cleaning their teeth.

I like to do half/half. Some kibble with a meat/fruit/veggie mix. Or if you feed him twice a day, do home made in the morning and kibble at night. If you skim the treats at pet smart too they do have some all natural fruit/salmon no filler treats, they're usually pricy so I wait till they're 50% off and thats usually 3wks to expiry.

I have a kong -like soccer ball with the hole in it, and put regular food, or if I have a FPC for food I dont use, I use that because its a different flavor. She thinks its a treat anyway. She has to roll the ball around and work to get the food out, so at least it takes her a while before her treats are gone. And if it rolls under or behind something..too bad, she has to work at getting it back. She gets exercise that way as well. Wouldnt mind baking her some treats though.

What do you put in your homemade food? I noticed a huge change in my cats diet when I put them on a grain free diet. They eat less food, have more energy and go longer between meals. None of them were severely overweight to begin with but I definitely think it has helped them stay at a healthy place.

I think it's much easier to keep them at a healthy weight than help them lose it though (just like people, haha). Good luck!
