I'm just starting to stockpile, and have been reading about, and looking at stockpile pics on different sites and I came across this topic: Items that don't last as long as you may think!

    *url removed*
So, I was curious, from your personal experince, what was the thing(s) you found that didn't stock very well?

PS~ I'm not sure if this Topic is in the right section, sorry if it's not.

not so good things to stockpile are things that can expire quickly...mostly food products, things with longish expires are good to stockpile, for example soups, crackers(they can slowly go stale even if not opened) it's best not to stockpile consumable items for more then 6-8 months

good things to stockpile are non-food related items for example razors, shampoo, plastic baggies, certain pills (Advil, Tylenol-but be cautious these tend to have an approx 1yr expiry) but do consider a bottle of shampoo does have an expiry, so does a stick of deodorant, these products can break down after a few years so although it might be an amazing deal it's not that great if you have so much already you can't use it (but donation is always a great option!)

Tried to find the article and managed to find a couple of tips from their site:
There are several reasons to keep a handle on the ol' stockpile.

    1. Space: Don't let your stockpile take over. Sacrificing the comfort of your family and making daily life difficult is not the goal of a stockpile. If things get uncomfortable, you have probably bought too much.

    2. Safety and Expiration Dates: We have threads on the expiration dates of various products. A deal isn't a deal unless you are actually going to use the item before it spoils. Ask yourself how much of a product your family can reasonably use in a given time frame, and STOP when you have that amount.

Whole wheat flour, brown rice - not good to stockpile as they will get rancid after six months or so. Unless you keep them in the freezer. Same concern with some oils. So stock up when it's on sale, but be sure to keep your stock rotated.
Always looking for reasonably healthy food coupons, non-dairy products, and friendly cleaners (esp Method brand).

Thanks for the imput guys...I just found it interest to read about what others have found out through their own experinces stockpiling.....I mean some things are obvious but then there's some stuff one may not think of!

A couple things that were mentioned from *removed* are, microwave popcorn, & creamy dressings....I didn't get to finish reading that Thread (there's quite a few pages!) but will mention stuff once I get more time.

I couldn't open the link, but I have a bit of a pet peeve about expiry dates...I'm old (51!!!) and it wasn't that long ago that nothing had an expiry date!!! Most things are just fine for much longer than the dates and I hate to think of what gets tossed that is perfectly fine. You don't need to read the date to know when milk goes bad... I just opened a box of Corn Flakes that "expired" in 2007--crisp as can be. That doesn't happen often, but it causes me no worry. We have a family friend that was a practicing pharmacist when expiry dates came into play and it saddened and angered her greatly to see how much perfectly good medication had to be dumped-she said, at that time, there were only about 3 medications that were seriously impacted with time.

Disclaimer: this is my personal opinion only, not to be taken as advice!

My rule for food items is smell it before you taste it! If you have had it for awhile and it smells off just toss it it's not worth getting sick over. The same rule for cosmetics too like shampoo can go rancid if left setting to long and so can opened mascara tubes I believe it's 6 months or less it usually tells you on the packaging how long it's good for.

Cake mix not good to stockpile. If Cake Mix is used after it's expiry date it can be toxic. A toxic mold can grow in the mix.

Previously I only stockpiled one extra of each necessary item, so that if it ran out I had a spare. On Extreme Couponing one of the ladies said sales cycle every 3 months, so have a 3 month stockpile. I'm not sure what a 3 month stockpile is on some items, so I'm using a permanent marker to mark the date I open a container on the container. For example label laundry detergent to see how long it takes to use one container.

My parents are from Europe and grew up with out refrigerators. They got fresh milk every few days, and stored it in a cupboard. I'm not a farmer, but I figured it would go bad after half a day.
