Hmmmmmmmm... Good question!!
...but I would assume that either way you should get back the "full value" of your item, because they're still redeeming for the coupon value.
For sure, people can take advantage of this, and I'm not sure what they would do if there was only 1 item on the receipt with a coupon. I have a feeling they wouldn't give you back any money.....

I am in the same situation ... I bought 5 bottles of Sunlight soap last night at Walmart. I had all my coupons ready but hadn't pulled my Sunlight coupons from the binder cause I was going to shop RCSS first to see if they would take both coupons (coupon zone and manu one). I put 5 in the cart at Walmart but forgot to give him my (5) $1 off coupons for it. My bill before taxes was $166, I paid $65. Imagine the list of coupons listed on the receipt. I tried to match each coupon to the items on the receipt so they can see that a coupon wasn't applied to them. I sure hope they don't give me a hard time ... but I can surely see how this could become a problem.

I was told at Walmart that if you return an item you have used a coupon with they give you the full value back (including the coupon value). They are going to get the coupon value back when they submit it to the company anyway.
Spent $4.00
coupon $2.00
Total paid $2.00
Return item you get a refund of $4.00
I hope I explained this right.

This may be the case but people PLEASE!!!!! don't start doing this. That is no different than a store going through their till receipts and putting in coupons for items that someone didn't use a coupon on only in reverse. If you buy something with a coupon with the intention of returning it so you can get full price back on it and make money that is abusing the system and eventually it is going to backfire and manufacturers will put more restrictions on coupons or put less out.
Seriously, do you really think there are not people from these companies browsing websites like SC to see what shoppers are doing and how they are using the coupons?
PS. I made this comment without seeing the original question and it was not intended towards that situation. My response was based on the knowledge that people have tried doing this when making purchases at LD on items they have gotten for free using coupons. I just don't want this to start happening at Walmart as well.

Yes, please, seriously don't get this started.
This happened, yes i did refund stuff i had given coupons, but please don't get this bad idea into peoples head..
If you have to refund don't worry about it, it's OK, but please don't start to buy junk just to get the coupon money by refunding, THAT would be really bad..
Seriously, really, last posts including this one should be deleted so a real bad wave of refunding does not start.. Well, my opinion on this..

If this has crossed anyone's mind they are more than likely one step ahead of the people on these forums and already doing it long before reading it here. I surely hope that people don't go to this extreme but sadly I am sure it is already happening. I know I wouldn't be able to sleep at night ....

I am referring to ONE box of cereal that I purchased full price and no coupons and actually bought the wrong flavor. I returned the thing and went into the store and bought the correct one...also WITHOUT a coupon...I was simply asking if anyone knows the correct policy ...prior to this "new" coupon policy when I had a return I went to customer service and returned it and have never been questioned as to whether I used a coupon to purchase the original item. I am not an extreme couponer and am not entirely sure I care for the implications of their new policies, I think it was much less complicated the other way...my 2 cents on the subject...

If you read my whole post you would see I was not referring to you. I even stated it and why I made the comments I did. There are people who will dishonestly do things to either get something free or make some money off of couponing. It was being made very clear that Walmart will give back full value on items even if bought with coupons and I was asking for people to please not start doing this.

A friend of mine that just started couponing said that she used a coupon for an item at walmart, and then when she went to return it (legitimate reasons, of course) they gave her back the full value of the item including the value of the coupon...she even pointed out to them that she used a coupon and they said that they had to give the full value back because the coupon was in transit already so they wouldn't be able to return her coupon to her.
I think that is very fair of them, because I had a similiar situation at SDM and they refused to refund me the amount of my coupon, even though they couldn't give the coupon back to me. The store owner said "they would be able to tell that we gave a refund for that item, so we won't get the money for the coupon anyway". I don't really believe that, but I didn't bother to argue, as it was only $2 and I was tired of talking about it.
The way that WM handles this is the only real fair way to do it...if they are giving a refund, they have to refund what they were paid for the item, and if coupons are like cash you can see why it is only fair that they refund the coupon amount too. Unfortunately, there will always be people that choose to abuse these policies, but I like to think there are far more honest people out there!

I went shopping at walmart yesterday, when i got to the cashout, i warned the cashier that i was using alot of coupons, she smiled and said where shall we start. I had placed my coupon with each item, luckily it went smooth... I did apoligize to the lady behind me... but she was having a good laugh with me. saying and i quote " if only i was smart enough to remember to use my coupons too" I saved $48.00 on my first coupon trip. I kinda shocked myself.

Why won't WM just release a policy to post in the stores!!!!!????!!!
I just got off the phone with my Walmart regarding coupon policy (again--I thought I'd try my luck with a different mix of employees/managers)...yes to printables, iffy on # per transactions, no to overages...their policy is to "adjust coupons down to the price of the item and then write the actual price on the coupon".
Now I have not seen this writing down of the price happen; however I did thank her for honesty and although I would *love* to have the overages, as long as they would adjust the coupon to the price of the merchandise, I was a pretty happy customer (which honestly isn't very often for the stuff I get anyway, but I get it down to lots of .50-.70 cent deals).
When I explained that *some* walmarts seem to be doing this overages-applied-to-the-basket, she actually said "oh my, that would be so awesome. very american! I hope they bring that here soon!". I will just have to keep splitting my coupons between me and my hubby and keep asking until they get the memo, I guess

According to another post Walmart Head office is working on completing an official policy but everything isn't worked out yet. The "policy" which is floating around right now was mailed to an individual and Walmart did not expect it to be made public like it has yet. It sounds like most stores are pretty much honoring it though. One staff (she does the coupons in the office) I was talking to the other day said the stores are fighting the overages because according to her head office gets them but it doesn't filter back down to the individual stores so she is constantly not balancing the books anymore. Guess there are alot of bugs to work out behind the scenes with this type of policy.
