Getting a cat from a reputable breeder will cost you beaucoup bucks. $800 is what one of my friends paid for her cat with papers. And even though the health was guaranteed, it was only for so long. Like dogs, the purer the breed, the more likely to have health issues.
As well, it doesn't take much to call yourself a breeder, apart from owning a pair of cats. Do your due diligence. If they just ask for $250 with no papers, you can be sure they're in it just for the money. It's a sure sign they don't have a reputation to protect.Last edited by blueeyetea; Fri, May 20th, 2011 at 02:05 PM.

No, I'm not a volunteer for a shelter. I've just had cats since I was a toddler
I've had all walks of cats and unfortunately even if their tests are all clear they can still die young from sickness. It's liike any animal, you can't forsee the future. My only problem with an older cat is it could already have the bad habits you don't want. A kitten is like a pup and you can "train" it easier for your rules, but thats just IMO. Plus who doesnt love a teeny tiny kitten haha. I've tried to take in cats that were an older age and it just did'nt work out, there were far too many behaviour issues.

You can't guarantee the health of a cat no matter how much you get it tested. Pick the one you fall in love with and love it with all your heart for as long as it is with you. All (but one) of my animals have been rescued animals. Some live long lives, others are not as fortunate, but we look at it this way: at least while they were with us, they received food, shelter, warmth and lots of love.

Have you looked at Cat Rescue Organizations? Just like dogs, some work specifically with certain breeds.

My mom as been a boxer breeder now for over 20 years and is well known .

If you decide to go with a breeder..the reputation will set them apart from the crappy ones.
I have 4 cats myself (found 1 in the woods, 1 under my car, 1 my friend didnt want anymore and the last i got from a breeder). I always wanted a siamese cat and i spent months researching good breeders in my area and finally had to drive almost 4 hours to the one breeder that i felt was the best choice compared to all the others.
