Bill would create Ontario poet laureate position in memory of Gord Downie

Could Gord Downie become Ontario’s first poet laureate? There's a move in the Ontario legislature to create the province's first poet laureate and name the position after late Hip frontman Gord Downie. NDP member Percy Hatfield introduced the bill, pointing out that Canada has a poet laureate and so do many cities in the province. Hatfield says Downie, who died in October, was a poet, singer and advocate for indigenous issues and it would be fitting to remember him by creating the title in his name.

Rogers considering sale of Blue Jays: report

Rogers Communications could soon be saying bye-bye birdie. There are reports that the company is considering selling the Toronto Blue Jays, along with a stake in media company Cogeco, in a bid to free up capital for other investments. Despite the initial rumblings from Bloomberg, Rogers Chief Financial Officer Tony Staffieri said no deal is imminent. He did hint at the possibility of the sale of the club, adding Rogers still wants rights to sports programming but doesn't have to own a team to have that, pointing to the company's 12-year deal with the NHL. If you don’t know who St Nicolas is, you’ll more than likely still know of his American version Santa Claus, or the British version of Father Christmas. OFM to investigate massive fire at Burlington food processing plant

Investigators with the Office of the Fire Marshal are expected to be at the scene today of a massive fire at a food processing plant in Burlington. The three-alarm fire broke out at Paletta International, a food processing plant located near the Queen Elizabeth Way and Appleby Line, shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday. At the height of the fire, 40 firefighters and 14 trucks were on scene battling the blaze. No injuries were reported and all staff members at the plant have been accounted for. The cause of the fire has not yet been released.

Ont. to announce how many students asked for tuition refund after strike

We should find out today just how many Ontario college students decided to make their first semester a wash. The province is set to announce today how many students have asked for a tuition refund after a five-week-long strike cancelled classes at Ontario’s colleges. The deadline for students to apply for a refund was this past Tuesday. Early data suggests the vast majority of students chose to stick with their programs and finish the extended semester.

Maple Leafs' Andersen slams door on Flames

Frederik Andersen stopped 47 shots through regulation and overtime, and three more in the shootout as the Maple Leafs edged the Flames 2-1 on Wednesday night. It was Toronto's second win over the Flames in eight days.
