The rocky planet circling the closest star to the sun got hammered by a superpowerful flare last year, a new study reports.
That's a bit of bad news for anyone hoping that the alien world, known as Proxima b, hosts life.
"It's likely that Proxima b was blasted by high-energy radiation during this flare," study lead author Meredith MacGregor, of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., said in a statement. [Proxima b: Closest Earth-Like Planet Discovery in Pictures]
"Over the billions of years since Proxima b formed, flares like this one could have evaporated any atmosphere or ocean and sterilized the surface, suggesting that habitability may involve more than just being the right distance from the host star to have liquid water," she added.

Good morning fellow Canucks!

In March, we also get our second "Blue Moon" of the year. We had one in January where we had two full moons in a calendar month. Tonight we get a full moon and another at the end of the month.

Also, the next couple of days, be on the lookout low in the western sky after sunset. You will see bright Venus. In addition to that, Mercury will be just to the right of Venus. Tonight Mercury will be lower right of Venus. Tomorrow they will be side by side. and on Saturday, Mercury will be upper right of Venus.

In the morning sky, I'm sure you have noticed a bright "star" in the southern sky. That is actually Jupiter. Left and lower than Jupiter you will see a ruddy red "star". This will be Mars. Interestingly, Mars will become more and more brilliant this spring. Earth is catching up with Mars in their orbits around the sun, and due to their elliptical orbits, in July, Mars and Earth will be their closest to each other since 2003.

Further east in the morning sky, you may catch a glimpse of Saturn.

So there you have it. You can see 5 planets this month... 6 if you count Earth!
