Seniors’ home & nearby school evacuated in Whitby due to fire Toronto staff Oct 27, 2014 11:58:49 AM 1ShareSeniors at a retirement home in Whitby have been forced out of their residence following a fire.The fire started just after 11 a.m. at Fairview Lodge near Dundas Street West and Cochrane Street.Neil McArtney, a producer with Rogers TV Durham, said the fire may have started in the attic in the old part of the building, according to the fire chief.In a tweet, police said the 192 residents have been accounted for and have been moved to St. John the Evangelist Church.The director of long-term care in Durham told McArtney the task is to find a temporary home for the seniors due to heavy damage caused by the smoke.Durham police have closed Cochrane between Walnut and Dundas, and people in the area are being asked to keep their windows closed.Police also said students are being moved from E.A. Fairman Public School by bus to Donald A. Wilson Secondary School due to the heavy smoke.


No injuries have been reported, and it’s not yet known what caused the fire.

Good morning, everyone.

Got all but one errand done yesterday. Debating whether today should be a housework day or a go out & play day (have til Thurs to clean, that's when company is coming over). Think I'll wait and see if it clears up (not raining any more, but it is still gloomy out there).

Brats have both gone back to bed (thinking I should do the same). Maybe they're annoyed our idiot counsellor got re-elected. We'll see what the future holds.

I live about 5 minutes from there. So glad no one was hurt. Kawam, glad ur mom's ok !!!
There was an incredible amount of smoke, and the police came around & told up to keep our windows closed, and not to go out. We were't in any danger, but there was so much smoke, it would be a respiratory issue. Went on all day.

Purchased a new work computer today for myself.
I have been using a laptop mostly for the last 3 years.
Went with a desktop and a pair of 24 inch monitors this time.

Going to be a big change.
Should be way faster and I wont have to have my nose 6 inches from the screen!
You guys are going to look GREAT!
