Two drawbacks - the roller brushes (whatever the thingy on the bottom of the vacuum is called) has to be cleaned regularly to keep the hair caught around it from impeding its movement (I do a quick 5 minute check every couple of days & I use the vacuum at least twice a day) and the cord has a tendency to kink and then fray (there are no issues if you keep the cord rolled up on the machine - I leave it loose during shedding season so I can quickly vacuum up tufts of fur in the hallway, sometimes 10x a day). The machine cost around $100 on sale at Canadian Tire a few years back (I'm not sure, but I think it's 4 yrs old and still performing nicely). Keep in mind, I do have a small space (less than 600 sq ft, maybe 450 sq ft of carpet at the most).
With my previous vacuum (Bissel, supposedly for critter fur), I would have to brush the carpet first to get all the hair loose enough to use the vacuum.
Hope this helps. :)
