scary stuff happening in brampton:

Here's what we know right now:

A veteran Peel police officer is in critical condition and another man, believed to be the gunman, is dead after a shooting at the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse in Brampton on Friday.

Multiple police sources tell CityNews they are searching for a second suspect.

The officer was rushed to Toronto's Sunnybrook hospital, where he remains.

The Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed the suspected gunman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SIU said the man entered the courthouse at 7755 Hurontario St. around 11 a.m. and fired a gun, "reportedly injuring" a Peel officer.

The officer also fired his weapon, the SIU said, striking the man.

Witness Anthony Chandra said the shooter came in through the lawyer's entrance, not through the main entrance.

“All I saw was the cop on the ground and the guy just laying there. It was ridiculous - people running. I've never seen anything like that in Brampton ever, especially in a courthouse.”

He was a white man in his 30s and was wearing a trench coat, Chandra said.

“When the cop said ‘come here,’ he just started shooting. I thought it was a firecracker to be brutally honest,” Chandra said.

“He point blank shot him [the officer] right in the chest. I heard like six shots.”

Chandra was still shaking when he spoke to reporters: “I'm still shaking. I just want to leave. I wouldn't expect that… like that shouldn't be happening, especially in a courthouse. There’s cops and families here, you know?”

A second witness who works in the building, who did not want to give her name, spoke to CityNews immediately after the shooting.

"I'm shaken up but OK," she said.

"I got a text from my supervisor that said 'stay down there, there's a shooting in the building,'" she said.

The SIU has assigned 13 investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.
