In most stores yes you have to pay the taxes... walmart's policy is no tax on FPC but getting them to follow thru on that has proven difficult. Shoppers used to have the company pay the taxes... but they have changed their tills and that seems to be disappearing. Most often we do end up paying taxes on freebies.

Yes as I've said before, your best bet to pay no tax on an FPC is a Loblaws banner store. For some reason they seem to be the only stores AWARE of the fact that the customer is not to pay tax on an FPC or the free item when you use a buy one get one free coupon. The above poster said it quite well...according to the government tax does not exist on an FPC, no one is "absorbing" it. Any Loblaws banner store I have used an FPC at, the cashiers have a chart and instructions at their tills to determine and deduct the taxes. Most other stores will give you an argument or scrutinize the wording on the coupon to see if it says tax is included. However, the wording on the coupon is in fact irrelevant.
