Today I went shopping at NF! I used the good old Scanning Code Practice on my cereal, which also had a coupon on the box for free granola bars! So I got 2 items free, plus $1.92 difference! Hello!

When I was shopping at NF last week I paid for my groceries and after I was looking at my bill... something rang in for a higher price than what I thought the sticker said. The clerk went back, pulled the tag and the tag said a lower price.
I thought I would get the difference like 'couponit' but the cashier reimbursed me the whole price so I got the item free. Now why would I get reimbursed fully and 'couponit' received only the difference???? Which one is considered Standard Code of Practice?? Thanks!!!!

What is the Scanning Code of Practice?
By Kimberley Clancy - www..ca
The Scanning Code of Practice is a voluntary code that nearly every major retailer in Canada adheres to. It promises the customer accurate price scanning at the register on all UPC scanned or Price Look Up (PLU) merchandise. If an item scans in at a price higher than the shelf price the customer gets it for free (or $10 off if the item is more than $10)
The scanning code is endorsed by The Competition Bureau of Canada was created from the collaborative efforts of the Retail Council of Canada, the Canadian Association of Chain Drug Stores, the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers and the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors.
At participating retailers you should see this sign on the entrance doors and at the till that reads:
Scanning Code of Practice If the scanned price of a non-price item is higher than the shelf price or any other displayed price, the customer is entitled to receive the first item free, up to a $10 maximum. If a Code of Practice problem cannot be resolved at the store level, please call 1-866-499-4599 to register your complaint.

I was at no frills and the voortman waffer cookies were marked $1.25 so I used my coupon and bought them. They rang up at $3.29 instead. when they sent someone to go and check the pricing on the shelf the employee came back and said it was an error someone had put the wrong price on the shelf. They told me they could not honor the $1.25 price since it was an employee mistake and they ended up taking it off my bill.
would this have fallen under the scanning code of practice? should I have fought for the price that they had marked on the shelf?

Hi Bekki3, the actual code of practice is to recieve the item free. I actually never purchased the cereal, I brought it to customer service and they gave it to me free plus the difference. I asked the clerk why are they giving me the money, they said that when he puts it through the computer, that the balance is negative, therefore it's yours. So maybe that was a bonus

Hi Julisa68, I would have fought for it simply because if as the customer I intended to buy this product for the price displayed, they should honoured it, then taken the wrong price down. It's the old saying, "the customer is always right"! As far as the Scanning Code since it as an error then I don't feel that it would apply however they should have honoured the price displayed. That's just my feeling since its happened to me before, Take care.
